Acceptable Mold Spore levels from Air Test Results

Acceptable Mold Spores Levels in Air Test Results

Acceptable Mold Spore levels from Quality Air Test Results

Significantly different from the surrounding environment. Mold is almost universal since it feeds on rotting plant and wood materials among many other things. As Certified Mold Testing Experts, we do not anticipate a mold test finding that indicates there are no spores present in the house. The existence of these spores, however, could signify a problem with the quality of the air in the home if we discover mold in the home in quantities and forms that we do not observe in the area around it.

The Type of Mold Present

The following list includes some of the most significant molds that your test results may reveal, along with a succinct description of each:

Penicillium/Aspergillus

The most prevalent mold species in homes are Aspergillus and Penicillium, both of which have over a thousand distinct species. Even in reasonably clean conditions, these molds can thrive when the only supply of moisture is the air's humidity. Since many times the species of mold outside and inside your home are different, it might be challenging to entirely eradicate these molds from your home.

Cladosporium

Another allergenic mold that grows outdoors and indoors is called Cladosporium. It frequently grows on fiberglass, wood, and painted surfaces. Cladosporium has a velvety look and a dark green or black tint.

Chaetomium

A particular kind of mold called chaetomium is frequently discovered in wet structures. It typically develops from moist drywall, carpets, and insulation. This particular mold breeds swiftly and disperses. It can seriously harm a house's structural integrity once it gains control of it.
Basidiospore Mushrooms and other fungi create basidiospores. They can frequently be found outside in moist, shaded settings like woodland areas or next to pools of water. On moist surfaces or in humidifiers, basidiospores can also be found indoors.

What is a mold spore trap or air sample? How were these samples collected?

Using a specialized pump, a consistent volume of air is drawn through a mold spore trap, a tiny plastic container about the size of a silver dollar, to collect an air sample. For small to medium-sized homes, we normally collect three air samples: one from the outside, one at the lowest finished level (where we suspect the most problems), and one at a higher level or in the area where we suspect the least problems with the air quality. We might take more samples from larger homes or residences with many possible problem locations for poor air quality.
We transmit the traps and supporting documentation to a lab for analysis after collecting the samples. Each trap's catch will be identified and counted by the lab, and we will receive the results in a report. The findings of a mold test should always be understood in the context of a house inspection or a mold inspection, which is why home inspectors who specialize in mold testing are some of the best experts to contact for a dispassionate assessment of the air quality in the home.

Various Spores

The test outcome will list the quantity and kind of spores discovered in each sample. The information will be presented and organized differently across different labs. Our laboratory divides the various spore kinds into three groups:

Water Indicators: (Red row)

These spores develop on moist or saturated surfaces within the home and may be an indication of a more serious/active/persistent indoor air quality problem with a higher potential for mycotoxin and allergy production.

Predominantly outdoor: (no color)

In general, these spores develop primarily outdoors and are poor predictors of the general air quality within the home.

Indoor/Outdoor: (Yellow row)

These spores, particularly aspergillums/penicillium, are excellent indications of indoor air quality problems since they frequently develop in damp settings in the home. Penicillium and Aspergillus are capable of producing mycotoxin and allergens.
An indoor mold is a form of fungus that is occasionally called mildew. Mold needs moisture to grow. It is recognized that some molds contain mycotoxin and allergenic potential. Mold is highly prevalent inside. Although most molds are benign, some varieties can be extremely harmful to human health, especially when present in huge amounts.

Evaluation of Mold spores Test

Spore Counts in the Raw

The best way to evaluate test findings is to consult a professional. Air quality issues may be indicated when the raw counts of specific spores are significantly out of range from the outdoor sample. Sometimes there are too many spores to count individually, thus only a percentage of them are counted in the lab. For instance, if only 10% of the raw count, which is 60, was evaluated, that may mean there were 10 times as many spores as 600. (Not 60). View the video for additional details

Spores per Cubic Meter Calculated

The report then estimates the calculated number of spores per cubic meter, or how many spores we can anticipate finding floating around in a cubic meter of air, using the raw counts. The test findings are best read by an expert; these visualizations can be informative but potentially deceiving. Remember that the maximum amounts can change depending on the sample; check the video for further details. These graphs are not to scale.

Understanding the results of your air quality test

Recognize that fungal spores can be found both inside and outside of the home, so if you see some red on the report marked "ELEVATED," don't panic. That does not imply that there is always a problem. Simply put, it indicates that the fungal spore count in question was at least ten times greater than in the outdoor sample. Regardless of that figure, it might not be a problem. The kind and overall quantity of spores will determine this.
Three air samples are taken to examine the air's quality; one sample is taken outside the house, and the other two are taken within. When the test results are available, we contrast the two indoor samples with the outdoor sample (which is called "background" on the report). We will know there is a problem in the house if any of the inside samples contain noticeably more mold spores than the exterior sample.

Frozen Pipe Burst in Home

17/12/2022

A Frozen Pipe Burst in Home

It's critical to shield your pipes from the cold. Due to this, even the most durable commercial plumbing system may encounter serious problems. Ice pressure could cause cracks, leaks, or bursts in your pipes if they are not shielded and insulated.
Durable materials are used to construct residential plumbing pipes, which can withstand water pressures of 45 to 80 psi. Pressure can surpass 25,000 psi, and the volume of the water can increase by as much as 9% when an intense freeze transforms liquid water inside a pipe into solid ice.
Frozen pipes break when they thaw because the extreme pressure and volume of the obstruction weaken them. The pipe explodes as a result of the enormous power that the thawing water exerts. Water downstream from the obstruction often retreats through the supply line to its external source. The direction of water flow to interior faucets is often where most of the damage from the break occurs.

IF YOUR FROZEN PIPES HAVE BURST

A leak can be tolerated, at least temporarily. The same is true with hot water issues. Even though low water pressure is a problem, you still have access to water. But coping with ruptured pipes is much more difficult. Pipe bursts can result in significant damage. There is no getting around it; consider how much water you use in an average evening. Imagine that instead of flowing from your taps, all that water is rushing out of a busted pipe in your walls or ceiling. It goes without saying that the amount of water that accumulates in your walls and ceilings produces a variety of issues!
You're certain the pipes froze over throughout the night. Before the worst occurs, you hope they would thaw.
  • These are just a handful of the symptoms that point to a significant issue if they do burst.
  • A sudden, loud roar may be heard coming from inside the walls.
  • Overnight leaky faucets aren't working.
  • After a flush, toilet tanks don't refill.
  • If there is water pressure, it is very weak.
  • Walls quickly acquire dark spots and moist streaks.
  • Broken pipes in the ceilings cause water leaks.
  • Pipes under sinks have moisture or frost on them.
  • Even if every fixture is off, the water meter still detects flow.
  • In the yard, you detect any unusual ponding or sinkholes.

What to Do If A Pipe Bursts

Quick action is required in the event of a burst pipe to stop or reduce the water flow and reduce damage. Use the water shut-off valve, remove all items from the affected area, and check that the drains are clear. Another crucial step is hastily drying the damaged area.
Mold growth is the biggest long-term worry associated with a water leak. There is a chance that mold could start to grow if moisture is left in the region as the weather warms. In the event that a basement floods, homeowners should proceed with great caution. The possibility of electrocution is increased in these areas by standing water.

These are a few of the plumbing pipe services we offer:
  • Freeze-ups in pipes, which need skill and patience because time is of the essence. Our plumbers are adept at handling frozen pipes to prevent them from bursting.
  • Burst pipes: Because of the potential for significant damage, nobody wants to deal with a situation involving a burst pipe. Yet, if a pipe does burst, our plumbers can repair the damage and get things back to normal.

How to minimize the property damage

The greatest approach to stop your pipes from busting is through preventative plumbing.
Yes, you can contact an emergency plumber to fix or replace a burst pipe. But, if you ask us, preventing damage to your house is preferable that reacting to it. It's not, it's preventative! Your neighborhood plumber will examine all your home's plumbing systems during a plumbing inspection. They'll be able to recognize issues and gauge their seriousness. The best part is that, if necessary, your plumber may also provide on-the-spot repairs for any problems they find!
  • As mentioned earlier, turn off the water supply.
  • Turn on all the cold-water faucets and flush the toilets to empty the system.
  • Turn off the immersion and the central heating. Let solid fuel burn out if you use it.
  • Turn on the hot taps to further drain the system after turning off the water heating altogether.
  • If it is safe to do so, turn off the mains if water from a burst pipe is spilling near any sockets, switches, or appliances. Do not touch a wet switch; instead, contact a licensed electrician.
  • Make sure you have access to the stop cock if you share a water source, such as if you live in an apartment building.

Get it fixed

How long it takes to clean and dry out your home and its belongings depend on how much water damage there is. It can take up to a week to restore the water, or it might take as little as two days. Our air sanitizers and water damage drying equipment are left behind at your house or place of business to complete the water cleanup process. We don't take down our cutting-edge machinery until temperature, humidity, and moisture testing state that the affected regions have dried to acceptable standards.
  • A ruptured pipe can be repaired by being bound with tape or fabric.
  • Replace this as quickly as possible with a long-lasting fix completed by a licensed and skilled plumber.
  • BEFORE turning your immersion or boiler back on, make sure your hot water system has been refilled.

Signs of a Pipe Problem

You might not be aware of the problems it might cause or what to check for if you haven't had a pipe burst. Some of the telltale indicators that a pipe has burst include water stains on the wall, pools of water on the floor, and strange sounds while turning on or off the faucet. You should be alert of a pipe leak even though these state a busted pipe (s). If there is a persistent leak, it is likely that you will soon be dealing with a burst pipe. Increased water bills, a change in the appearance or smell of the water, and adjustments to the water pressure are all signs that need to be looked into right once.

I know that many homeowners overlook warning indications of a plumbing issue, as I minimized and disregarded the discomfort in my tooth in the months before my root canal. They may worry that they will need to have expensive and invasive work done as well as worry that their problems don't actually need the services of a plumber. It's all too simple to brush off a smelly drain or write off low water pressure as a sign of an old house or a minor issue. But as I've already mentioned, throughout my years in the plumbing industry, I've seen far too many people disregard similar problems only to learn that they were signs of a larger problem. It's crucial as a homeowner to understand how to identify plumbing problems so you can take care of minor problems as soon as they arise. So that you can take preventative action and maintain your home in top condition, I'll go through some of the warning signs and symptoms of damaged pipes and plumbing issues.

Avoid Having Your Home's Pipes Freeze

A burst pipe emergency in the dead of winter is something that no homeowner wants to deal with. Unfortunately, frozen and broken pipes are a regular issue during the severe winters. We provide 24-hour emergency plumbing services, so we can come to your home whenever you need us. Our plumbers are committed to offering effective, superior plumbing repair.
  • With these six easy suggestions, you can safeguard your pipes and get ready for freezing temperatures:
  • Before holidays, drain the pipes
  • Find your shutdown valve location for emergencies.
  • Reduce draughts and insulating pipes
  • Protect your RPZ valve and outdoor faucets.
  • Open doors below sinks when it gets below freezing and leave a faucet running all night.
  • If your pipes do freeze, defrost them.
A burst pipe is a significant issue that might occur when it is below freezing. When water freezes inside your pipes, it expands. Due of the extreme strain this puts on it, a pipe may explode. If a pipe explodes, hundreds of gallons of water per hour will be released. In addition to creating a major mess that will be expensive and time-consuming to clean up, this water can damage wood, carpets, floors, and drywall. The harm from a ruptured pipe can be lessened with prompt intervention. If you can, find the main water shut-off valve for your house and switch it on right away.

FROZEN PIPES

In cold temperatures, some pipes may freeze but not break. The situation has improved, but your pipes are still inoperable. Furthermore, you might find that your pipes are frozen before they break, which would allow you to use a professional before any damage is done. A frozen water line or drain pipe is only a couple of signs that your pipes have frozen:
  • None of the faucets are dripping water.
  • Ice or frost covering exposed pipes
  • Unusual burbling or gurgling noises coming from the pipes
  • Clogged drains
    • Pipes in unheated interior spaces, such as crawl spaces, attics, and basements, are prone to freezing. Insulate any exposed pipes against the cold. Wrap them in pipe insulation or heating tape to prevent them from becoming too cold.
    • Keep cabinet doors beneath sinks open - By keeping the cabinet doors under your sinks open, warm air will circulate over the pipes, keeping them warmer.
    • Keep your home at a pleasant temperature - Even when you are away, your home should be kept at 55 degrees or higher.
    • Before a cold snap, open the faucets on your exterior faucets and let a trickle of water stream through the pipes.
    • Moving water does not freeze, only standing water does. Garden hoses should be disconnected, drained, and stored throughout the winter.
To deal with any frozen pipes inside or outside of your home, you should call a qualified plumber straight soon to avoid a costly tragedy. Anytime pipes freeze, they risk bursting. Your home can flood as a result of this. Our local plumbers are able to locate frozen pipes and immediately fix or replace them before they break or crack. In the event that a pipe has already broken and is starting to leak, we provide burst pipe repair services. We have been repairing broken pipes for more than 20 years. Using their expertise and sophisticated equipment, our plumbing technicians can find any frozen pipes and return your pipes to regular operation.

When tiling a bathroom where do you start?

When tiling a bathroom where do you start?

Each person wishes to give their tiles a more attractive appearance. This is where the origin of your project comes into play. Any surface must first have a thorough layout before it can be tiled. In this manner, both your cuts and your tiling pattern are known. Before you begin tiling, decide where you want to place the first tile. Lay the rest of your tiles after the first one. Although tiling is a relatively safe task, it is advisable to use caution as with any DIY project. Make sure you are wearing the proper eye protection if you will be chiseling, removing, or cutting new tiles. Similarly, you might want to put on the proper safety gloves if you plan to handle tools like trowels. Another choice is a face mask.

Knowing where any hot water pipes are located inside the walls of your bathroom can be beneficial. Any electrical connections are the same. Use a pipe locator to quickly locate any pipes if you don't know where they are located.

Where to Start Tiling: Things You Should Know

Where to begin tiling a floor is one of the most commonly requested questions. Your floor could be tiled at any time. However, starting in the wrong place can result in uneven joints and an unbalanced tile installation. The tiling pattern you choose to use will determine where to start while tiling a floor. There are specific methods for tiling that can be used.

Using Various Tile Sizes

Many tile designs in recent years have used tiles in more than one size. The layout calls for the sequential placement of two or three tiles of various sizes and shapes throughout the floor. The leftmost corner of the room should serve as the beginning point if you follow this arrangement. Standing by the entrance. The benefit of installing tiles from the corner is that cutting the tiles to fit them at the margins will be simpler. You can also set the tiles in the pattern you like if you start at the corner.

Straight-lined tiling

If you're just starting off, you should stick to this tiling pattern to prevent any mistakes. Two methods can be used to choose the starting point for laying tiles in a straight line. The first approach entails locating the wall's center point on the side opposite the front door. Since there will be a whole row of tiles in front of you as you enter the room, this will give your tiles a more finished appearance. The tiles can be laid out across the rest of the room's perimeter after being cut at the edges.

Backsplash Tile Installation

Always start from the center of the wall when tiling a backslash. This maintains all of the tiles level and symmetrical and provides your backsplash a more appealing appearance. Measure the wall's length and divide it in half to determine its center. At this midpoint, mark a straight line, measure the height of the wall, and divide that measurement in half as well. At the intersection of the two lines, draw a line. The backsplashes center and starting point for tiling is here.

Starting point for tile work around a bath

Start at the bottom and work your way up when tiling the wall around a bath. At the top, cut tiles won't be as noticeable. Additionally, tiles may slip and fall due to weight if you begin tiling from the top of the wall. It is simple to end with a whole tile if you don't tile from floor to ceiling.

Starting point for tile work around a bath

Are you planning a brand-new bathroom or are you just updating an old one? In either case, a smart place to start is by perusing the most recent bathroom tile patterns. Bathroom tile trends provide you with information about current interior design trends as well as a jumping-off point for examining your own unique style and preferences. Homeowners are becoming more daring with small powder room designs and creating distinctive primary bathroom rooms rather than just creating a functional place.

What are the Latest Bathroom Design Trends

Consider these bathroom tile trends for 2023 as your starting point when selecting a bathroom tile design. Let your imagination run free while drawing inspiration from them. And keep in mind that having fun and not holding yourself back is this year's top bathroom tile trend.

Ribbons & Slats

One of the newest bathroom tile fads is long, thin tiles, sometimes called "ribbons" or "slats." When putting ribbons and slats in your bathroom, you have a variety of alternatives to select from. For instance:
  • Set them up in mosaics.
  • Between larger tiles, place them.
  • Use sizable tiles that are designed to resemble slats.
  • Lay them out in original configurations, like the herringbone pattern.
  • Add texture by selecting textured tiles or by arranging them to give the appearance of three-dimensionality.

Black and White Patterned Floors

Black and white patterned tile is one of the major trends in bathroom floor tiles. Contrary to common belief, black and white tile patterns are not new; in fact, they were one of the first bathroom floor tile designs. Hexagon, octagon and dot, and penny round tile in black and white were popular floor tile styles when bathrooms were first placed in houses.

Zellige Tile

Another recent bathroom tile design that has shown some sturdiness is zellige tile. A Moorish and Islamic tile-making process called zellige includes hand-crafting tiles with extreme care and attention. Traditional zellige tile is still used in construction all over Spain, Morocco, and the Islamic world.
The popularity of zellige tile is currently on the rise as people start to favor more organic and natural aesthetics. However, the recent zellige tile revival is streamlining the designs, which were previously complex multicolor mosaics. Nowadays, monochrome zellige tile looks are more common, however, color blocking and the use of strong colors are also fashionable. Now that zellige tiles are being created in large quantities, more tile selections are available that have a handcrafted appearance.

Patterned Penny Round Tile Floors

Our next trend is a continuation of vintage-inspired designs. Around the same time as domestic bathrooms themselves, penny round tile first appeared in Victorian architecture. Yes, they are one of the initial black-and-white bathroom floor tile designs that contributed to the development of the aforementioned trend. Penny round tile continues to be one of the most designs, in addition to influencing other contemporary bathroom tile styles.
Modern penny round tile designs, like the diamond pattern above, typically prioritize patterns over monochrome aesthetics. Word-based designs are a wonderful way to use penny rounds as well.

Large-Format Wall Tile

One of the largest bathroom tile trends for 2022, if not the biggest, is large-format tiles. For tile to be deemed large-format, it must be at least 12 inches long. Gauged porcelain tile panels and slabs come in sizes up to 10 × 15 feet.  Large-format tiles have the advantage of having fewer grout lines, which results in a cleaner appearance and can visually enlarge your area. The appearance of wallpaper or large slabs of real stone can also be simulated with fewer grout lines. Large-format tiles are certain to dazzle, no matter what style or design you choose.

Checkerboard Tile

The top of the list is the checkerboard tile. You might automatically imagine checkerboard tile in opulent areas like grand entrances. However, it's a terrific option to quickly and easily add aesthetic flair to your bathroom. Depending on the color combinations you pick, this will have a certain effect. Choose a classic black-and-white color scheme for a vintage or classic appearance. Conversely, if you're going for a softer, more contemporary look, use colors that contrast less, as in the example below.
Since checkerboard tile complements both traditional and modern design, it is particularly useful for connecting together transitional bathrooms. So that you can see more of the pattern, keep in mind that smaller checkerboard tiles perform better in smaller bathrooms.

How to Design Bathroom Tile Layout

Tile offers a wonderful canvas on which to express your creativity. They can be as subtle or as spectacular in design as you choose, but their durability makes them a practical option for walls and floors. Tile, which is readily available in a wide range of hues, finishes, sizes, forms, and price ranges, also has a secret weapon: the ability to express your personality and alter the visual proportions of your space by selecting a chic or cunning scheme.

Fade a Color to Increase Ceiling Height

If you're searching for small bathroom tile ideas, our tile layout design is ideal for you. Any area with a limited ceiling height, such as a bathroom, kitchen, mudroom, or entryway, can benefit from using the tile method demonstrated in this bathroom by Base Interior.
To give the illusion of a taller room, simply use darker tile in the lower half of the tiled area and switch to brighter hues as you move above.

Create a rainbow effect

A similar effect can make a small bathroom look bigger and more intriguing with a rainbow stripe of tiles, just as color fade can be used to exaggerate ceiling height. Stick to a fairly small color palette if you want the impact to be subtle rather than overt, and place brighter colors farther apart to give the illusion that the room is longer.

Interesting Tile Materials Mixed

It can be very challenging to add interest to a small space without making it feel crowded. One clever way to accomplish this and designate various zones within the room is to use various tile materials and layout patterns.

Use One Tile, Two Ways

One tile pattern can be fixed in two different ways to produce a more intriguing look if you want to add interest to a kitchen but are on a low budget. The tiles are fixed horizontally and then vertically, alternating on each tier, to provide a checkerboard effect with a repeating step pattern of yellow as opposed to a straightforward stacked grid.

Use Zoned Tiling to Create Contrast

Placing patterned tile in one area and plain flooring adjacent to it is one technique to designate zones in an open-plan concept. Highly patterned tiles can also be utilized to add surprise to an otherwise plain space. The timeless elegance of a monochromatic scheme always wins points, and the chevron-patterned tile here elevates it even further.

Final Words

Before placing tiles, prepare the surface by removing any loose paint or wallpaper and repairing any holes and cracks with a filler. After that, use sandpaper to smooth the surface and a moist sponge to remove any dust and debris. Apply painter's tape to the window's edges after the surface has had time to dry. To stop the mortar from harming the nearby surface, this is done.

To-Do List before Selling Your Property

To-Do List before Selling Your Property

To-Do List You Should Do before Selling Your Property!

As a landlord and property owner, it is imperative that the unit you are renting to potential tenants is not only spacious and aesthetically pleasing, but also safe and well-functioning. Complaints of leaking roofs or clogged pipes will cost longer in the long run to repair as not only do you risk losing unhappy tenants, but because one problem is likely to compound into several more mishaps. A leaking roof can also cause mould growth, damaged wallpaper or paint chipping off. The sooner these issues in your property is thoroughly examined and renovated, the easer your business will be when leasing or selling your property, satisfied customers.

Furthermore, the last thing anyone wants is the risk of harm to someone’s health. Mold allergies, non-functioning fire systems, outdated boilers and pipes about to burst can not only injure someone, but also threaten someone’s life. Home is meant to be a safe, comfortable place for anyone, and the following checklist will make sure that this is so for your potential clients.

1. Water leakage detection

Do you suspect that there water stains on the ceiling or walls? Is there an area where paint keeps chipping off? Is there frequent condensation on windows? Moisture control is crucial to making sure the home is well insulation, energy efficient and mold resistant. Addressing leaking taps and pipes can save up to 2000 gallons of water per year!

A way to detect if there are any large leaks is by using the water meter. Turn off all taps and appliances that use water, both inside and outside the house, then take note of the meter reading. After 20-30 minutes, if the reading changes, it could be due to a large water leak that should be found and fixed immediately. Smaller leaks, however, can go unnoticed and are difficult to detect.

Since water leaks can come from many sources (taps, tub, toilet, water machines etc.), it saves a lot of time and money to hire experts to check the house thoroughly for water leaks. GTA Resoration’s water leak detection is an example of a good service to get this done. From there on, if there are leaks that are easily repairable, such as a leaky faucet, simply fix it yourself. Having a new faucet is also attractive and a bonus point for selling your home. For major leaks, it is better to hire a service to get it fixed.

Waterproofing the house is another option to consider. Chances are, Water leaks will continue to occur throughout the year. Many leaks will go unattended for years and cause huge water losses in the long run. Unnoticed water leaks can also lead to structural damage and mold growth, which compound the amount of problems in the building that you may end up paying a lot of money for. Waterproofing may initially seem like a costly process, but it saves a lot of time and money in the long run as it prevents future leaking and mold formation.

2. Is there mold growth or chances of mould growth?

Chances are, there is already some mold in the house, especially in the bathroom. Having a mold removal service like that of GTA Restoration is an excellent choice to rid the property of any mold growth. The next step is to prevent this further.

Many people suffer from mold spore allergies. Furthermore, mold spores can react with substances in the air to create toxins that take the form of black mold spores that can cause respiratory illnesses and asthma in those living among it.

Two of the main causes of mold growth are water leakages and roof leakages (check number 2 and 5 on this list).

If you have decades old carpeting or a stack of ancient newspapers, throw them away. It is highly likely that mold (among many other nasty entities) are thriving there already, completely unnoticed.

Buying a humidity meter can make it easy to keep humidity levels between 30-60%, which is the safe zone to avoid mould growth.

Improving air circulation is also a great away to make an environment unsuitable for mould growth. Install door holders to keep doors open between rooms, clean out ventilation shafts and move furniture away from windows and walls. The kitchen, bathroom and laundry room must have ventilation installed that is functioning and well cleaned.

Check the drainage system and exterior of the house. Does the water slope away onto the road or does it stay and collect around the house? Make sure there are drainage pipes to collect water from the roof and direct it away from the house.

If you are renovating the walls of the house, buy mold resistant paint and give the walls a coat of some neutral color. Remove old wallpaper (which mould can grow behind), clean the walls and paint it freshly with mold resistant paint. Not only does this mold-proof the house, but it also gives an appearance that isn’t distracting and is attractive to buyers.

3. Is the house electrically safe?

Ontario’s Electrical Safety Authority reported that nearly 110 children under the age of 15 are rushed to emergency due to electrical injuries every year. The number of non-fatal electrical injuries is even higher.

Making your property’s electric circuits safe is perhaps the most important item on your checklist-especially if you plan to sell to a family with children. Here are some of the things you can look out for:

Burn marks on sockets; if you see any of these around the house/building, have it looked into immediately.
Worn out or broken cables. Each and every cable and lead should be thoroughly examined to make sure it isn’t close to water sources or heat sources such as the stove, isn’t in a place where it can be touched or tripped over easily and is properly covered and insulated.
Broken outlets or visible colored wires. All wires should be held firmly inside the socket. The socket should be checked to see that there aren’t any naked live-wires or broken wires.

It is a good idea to invest in safety proofing all the sockets. This will greatly attract buyers with children.

4. Is the roof leaking?

Leaving a leaking roof can end in many ways-and none of them are good. Except for the annoying breeze of bitter cold air that can come through and the dripping of water into the household after every rain spell (which is more than enough to turn away buyers immediately), leaking roofs bring with them an abundance of health hazards. The most dangerous of these is the risk of fire. Water getting under the roof can make its way into the electrical circuits and wiring in the ceiling. Even if it doesn’t cause a fire, it can damage many electrical outlets in the house and a house without functioning electricity is a house no one will live in.

Water can also corrode wooden roof support and wall framing. This deterioration, if left alone long enough, could cause the roof’s foundations to collapse.

5. Fire safety

Test all present smoke alarms and install new ones in each and every room in the house. This is the most important step of preparing your property for sale. Fire extinguishers should be kept around the house where the likelihoods of a fire damage occurring is highest and is easily accessible in the case of an emergency. Get the boiler and gas pipes checked by the gas provider, and ask them to take a look to make sure there aren’t major fire hazards lying around that could be removed.

All of this may sound expensive, time consuming and maybe even unnecessary to some, but it is crucial to look at the long term consequences of neglecting any of the issues listed. Major water leaks, unhappy tenants and an actual fire are things that will not save you any money or time and can be avoided by taking the necessary precaution before selling a safe, energy efficient property to a happy family.

How to Prevent Water Damage to Your Home

5/9/2022

How to Prevent Water Damage to Your Home

What you need to know to protect your home from cold weather water damage ,

Winter can be a dangerous time of year for your home. Water can infiltrate your home and cause damage once the temperatures dip below freezing. Water pipes can freeze and burst, ice dams can form on your roof, and melting snow can infiltrate your home. Spend the colder months staying warm and bonding with family and friends instead of worrying about the risk of water damage. Consider this list of things that you can look out for and prepare against before the temperatures get too cold.

Preventing Your Pipes from Freezing

In the winter months when the temperatures begin to dip, your water lines become increasingly likely to face catastrophic failure. Water lines that run along outside walls, in attic spaces, or inside of crawl spaces are the most vulnerable to the cold. You will also need to pay close attention to any outside faucets that are not rated for the cold temperatures. If your pipes become cold enough to freeze than it is likely they will burst, like a frozen can of soda pop. This is especially likely for outdated and poorly installed plumbing pipes. Here are a few ways to help you prevent that from happening.
  • If any of your faucets supply lines are at an elevated risk of freezing, then you can keep a small stream of water running through them. Even a small steady stream is usually enough to keep the faucet and its water lines from becoming frozen. Keeping the water moving through the pipe will help keep it from freezing.
  • Take a good look around your home’s exterior and foundation for sources of infiltration and leaks. Look for cracks or holes which you can seal with silicone. Look for any gaps or obvious points of entry through your siding. If you have an access hole to your crawlspace, then you can seal it up for the winter to help keep the moisture and the cold air out.
  • Insulate all the visible water lines, even if they are under your home they can still freeze. You can find a pre-made pipe insulation at most big box stores that will help prevent your pipes from freezing. This may be all the difference that you need this winter.
  • Opening cabinet doors that have plumbing behind them will let the warm air from your home circulate around the pipes helping to keep them warm. Remember to put all the chemicals and cleaning materials up where children and animals are unable to bother them.
  • You should leave the temperature in your home set at the same temperature through the night as you do the day. If you are lowering the temperature at night, your house may cool off, making it harder for your home to stay warm. Leaving it at one temperature will assure your home stays warm and making it less likely that your pipes are will freeze.
  • If your pipes do freeze, then you should shut the water off to your home immediately and call a certified repair company.

Ice Dams

Ice dams form when warm air from your attic melts the snow along your roof. The water rolls down into the eaves of your roof where it is cooler, and it can refreeze. Or the water can pool up around clogged gutter systems where it will freeze over and prevent the water and snow from leaving the roof. This leads to water potentially seeping up under your shingles and can causing damage to your roof. You will need to prevent or correct this problem to avoid having potential issues in the future. Here are some ways to help prevent it.
  • You should clean and inspect your gutter system regularly to assure that the melted snow can easily roll off your roof and away from your home in a safe and proper manner.
  • Installing gutter screens to make sure that your gutters remain clean and clear. Having gutter screens installed will help prevent any future blockages in your gutter drains.
  • Make sure that you have an appropriate amount of insulation in your attic. The warm air in your attic is what causes ice dams. Making sure that it is well insulated and not allowing excessive air to leak from the living space is one of the best ways to prevent this issue.
  • Make sure that there is proper ventilation in your attic. There should be soffit vents that allow cold air in at the bottom of the attic and roof vents near the peak that allow the warm air to escape. Your attic space should be around 5 to 10 degrees warmer than the temperature outside.
  • Removing the snow on your roof once it gets deeper than 6 inches. Excessive snow build-up can put too much pressure on your roof, it can cause the water to seep under the shingles, and it will take much longer for it to melt away.
  • When you have a new roof installed you can have a water membrane installed under the roofing which will help prevent any water from being able to leak inside.
  • You can also have a snow shield installed with your roofing to help protect your home

When the Snow Melts

When spring arrives, you may have a ton of melting snow to deal with. This can cause a whole list of problems itself. Water will try and seep through your foundation and into your home if you allow it. Here are some ways to avoid this problem.
  • Clearing the snow off your roof before it starts to warm up too much. This will prevent ice dams from forming and keep your roof in a better condition for spring without the worry for repair.
  • Check your basement regularly for any water seeping through the foundation or burst water lines. You may not realize that a waterline has burst until it has already caused serious damage. Regularly inspect your drain lines and make sure they are not leaking, this can also quickly become a big issue.
  • Keep your gutter drains clear and pointed away from your home or into your sewage system. Make sure they currently and continue to drain correctly and are not pooling the water up next to your foundation.
  • Shoveling the snow away from your foundation before it melts will help keep a lot of that water and moisture away from it before it has time to seep into your home or potentially cause foundation issues.

What Else Can You Do to Prevent Water Damage

Sometimes there are less obvious things that you may need to do to help your home whether in the cold months. Here are a few things that will help make it a little bit easier.
  • Disconnect any outdoor hoses. This will prevent them from freezing and breaking the hoses. Once the hose is disconnected from the faucet it will allow you to turn it on just enough that it can avoid freezing. You can also insulate it to try and avoid having any issues.
  • Keep an eye out for condensation in your homes. As your heater runs and warms up your home, you may notice that windows, pipes, or maybe even walls have condensation forming on them. This can be a sign of an issue; you will need to lower your homes' humidity by mechanical means or by fixing the issue that is causing the excess in humidity. This could be a sign of a water leak infiltrating your home.
  • If there are areas in your home where you are concerned that a leak may happen, like around water lines, water heaters, sump pumps, or drain lines. You can buy and install moisture alarms to alert you if excessive moisture becomes present.
  • It is a good idea to look over your water lines yearly to ensure that there are no leaks that you should correct before the cold weather arrives. An already leaking water line is far more likely to burst once the temperatures get below freezing.
  • You can also purchase sewer back up insurance. Most insurance plans will not cover it if your sewer backs up into your home. With the excessive amount of water draining into your sewage system from the snow melting it can easily overcome the capabilities of your system. Leading to it backing up into your home and causing much more serious issues.
  • Keep an eye on your old water heater is another thing that you should do throughout the winter months. The cold weather can put more pressure on your old water heater which can cause it to leak. Having to heat colder water than normal, longer hotter showers, and more time inside your home puts a lot of strain on older water heaters.

Water Leak Require Emergency Plumber!

30/5/2022

Water Leak Need Emergency Plumbing Service!

No matter how vigilantly we act, life gives us new surprises every moment!

Some surprises are pleasant, and others are just signs of a big problem waiting to be treated!

As soon as winter arrives, you should get ready for the second type of surprise. Due to extreme weather in Canada, your property needs an inspection before the winters start. However, sometimes, it is impossible due to your work or family commitments, so we advise performing a Water Leak Detection.

But do you know what this lapse can result in?

Unattended problems going around your property can cost you thousands of dollars. It is always best to pay attention when things seem to be working well, as a stitch in time saves nine.

In our blog, we’ll share different plumbing problems that might be budding in your pipelines. Most homeowners have to go through plumbing issues arising in their water pipelines, sewer pipelines, or gas pipelines.

It can include any clogged drain, leaked sewer pipes, frozen pipes, or the consequences of these problems. These ignored problems can result in water damage, sewer backup, or mould growth. The repairs of water damage can easily cost you anywhere around $5000.

Water Leak That Will Require Emergency Plumber?

Every problem we will discuss might be different, but requires the same solution – Emergency Plumbing. Take immediate action to call plumbing service if any of the following emergency is identified in your property.

Water Leak Pipe?

Leaky pipes are potentially the most significant problem most homeowners face. But unfortunately, there can be many reasons why your pipes might be leaking. The leaking pipes can result in water damage extending to your house ceilings, floors, furniture, and other belongings. It can result in mould growth on your property, resulting in severe health hazards for residents.

Besides, the water wastage due to leaking pipes can make significant additions to your water bill. According to estimates, a leaking pipe can result in around 90 gallons of water wastage every day.
What can be the reasons for leaking pipe?

Here are some of the most common reasons why you have a leaky pipe in your home’s pipeline:
  • The pipe installations in your home are old enough to get rusted. It results in weakened pipes, which can become a reason for leakage.
  • We all love trees and plants around us. But these refreshing and beautiful-looking trees can sometimes be the actual cause of the problem. When the trees grow, their roots also extend underground. An intruding root might have caused the pipe to get leaked.
  • Another reason for leaking pipes in your property is broken or damaged seals within plumbing lines. The seals are not made to last forever. Normal wear & tear of seals can loosen the pipes and result in leakages.
  • Sometimes, clogs are also a reason why your pipes start leaking. When a clog at a point is left untreated, it can result in water pressure at a point. As more force is exerted by flowing water, any small crack in your pipe can convert into a leakage.
  • Damaged joints or improperly laid pipes can also be a reason for this annoying water leaking problem.

Broken Water Main Valve?

Broken water main is another problem faced by a lot of Canadian households. Water main valve is the primary link between your home’s plumbing system and public water supply. If you fail to locate a broken or damaged water main before time, it can result in irreversible damages.

Due to the underground network of the main water valve, you might fail to locate a budding problem before it actually starts showing red signs. Therefore, regular inspection is recommended to save yourself from any future challenges.
What can cause your water main valve to get broken?

The following can be the reasons behind your home’s water main breakage:
  • The cold temperature of Canada is potentially the most significant reason for pipe bursting and breakage at residential and commercial properties. The frozen water in pipelines due to temperature decrease can exert additional stress on pipes and cause them to expand. Besides, the freezing temperatures negatively affect pipes and made them brittle.
  • Of course, the ageing and wear of your main water pipe cannot be ruled out from probabilities. As the pipes become old, their material gets rusted or brittle, which can result in breakage.
  • The material of the installed pipeline also matters. If you have low-standard or sub-standard pipes installed in your plumbing system, you might get in trouble with a broken water main.
  • Your proximity to any nearby construction site also affects underground pipelines and wiring. Any work going around can become a headache for you in the form of broken water mains. Sometimes the constructors might be trying to fix a problem of another property and cause damage to your pipelines.

Clogged Drain Pipe?

Water clogs themselves are signals to a persisting problem going on in your pipelines or plumbing system. A plunger might be enough to fix a sink clogged drain. But if the clogged drain are occurring more frequently, you need to pay attention. If left unattended, the damages can result in complete failure of your plumbing system or pipes bursting. It can also cause flooding or water damage.

What can be the causes of clogged drain pipe?
  • If you’re constantly ignoring hair, soap, or dirt accumulation in your sinks, it is time to stop and pay attention. Hair is mostly the biggest culprit behind drain clogged pipe.
  • Your food waste in the kitchen sink should go into the dustbin instead of the drain pipe. Waste particles of tea and coffee don’t break down and become an uninvited disaster for your plumbing system.
  • The mineral buildup also causes blocked and clogged drains. If you are in an area with hard water, it can cause mineral buildup in your pipelines. Hence, reducing the space for water to flow freely. You can root out the problem by installing a water softener if your locality has a hard water problem.
  • Toilet papers can also be a reason why you’re facing the problem of clogged sinks or drains. Although, toilet paper is designed to flush out easily. However, if you’re using too much, it will become a problem maker. Toilet papers are hard enough to get dissolved in water and can cause drain clogs.

Any tree roots intruding on your underground pipelines can also get stuck in pipes. Solving the stuck tree roots can be complex and require extensive repairs.

Frozen Water Pipe from the Winter!

You might be relaxed and unbothered about frozen pipes as you reside in a locality with no problem of freezing temperature. Let us tell you that frozen water pipes can still be a problem, even if freezing temperatures are rare in your area. And it can be more disastrous as most people will not insulate their pipelines in such areas.
When the temperature in exteriors decreases, the frozen water in pipelines results in the expansion of pipelines. As a result, your pipes might get cracks and leakages. There is even a risk of pipe bursts that can cause flooding. The persistent problem of flooding can result in the growth of dangerous moulds on your property. It signifies a plethora of new issues for you.

You can take protective measures once you’ve identified a frozen pipe. Either call emergency plumbing service to take care of frozen pipes for you.

What can cause frozen water pipes?
  • The most apparent reason for frozen pipes is the low temperature in winters.
  • Besides, the level of insulation around your home’s pipeline also contributes to any problem in pipes when the temperature is low.
  • If you’re in an area of rare freezing temperature, your pipelines might be lacking the necessary insulation increasing the risk of burst pipes.

You might be wondering which pipelines are most likely to get suffered from the freezing problem.

Most commonly, pipes along exterior walls having inadequate insulation might get suffered from the extreme temperature outside. Also, Pipelines in attics or basements do not get the same amount of heat as other parts of your home. As a result, the chances of freezing are high.

Burst Water Pipe?

A burst water pipe is an event that might take place due to any of the instances mentioned above. The material of your pipe does not affect if the pipe can break or not. Either it is plastic or steel, you are at risk of getting cracks in the pipeline.

A burst water pipe is usually caused by ignorance of any of the problems we’ve mentioned earlier. If you had ignored water clogs, frozen pipes, leaking pipes, etc., you should be ready to bear the consequences of the burst water pipes.

What to do once you’ve discovered a burst water pipe in your property?

The first thing you’re supposed to do is shut off the main water supply as soon as possible. The next thing to do is calling emergency plumbing services to rescue you from the damage. It is also recommended to turn off the power supply to avoid any short circuiting due to water. The sooner you take corrective measures, the better.

Clogged Or Leaky Sewer Line?

Clogged Or Leaked Sewer LineJust like your internal pipeline, your home’s or commercial property’s sewer line can also become a victim of leakage or clogging. If you have frequent drain clogs at different places in your property, it might be a sign of a bigger problem(sewer line clog).

The results of the leaking sewer line can be severe. It can include sewer backup, burst sewer pipes, or wastewater flooding. You must pay attention to alleviate any reasons for clogging because sewer backup or flooding can cause serious health hazards besides property damage.

Sewer Backup?

When the clogging gets severe, or there might be another problem in the sewage drain of your area resulting in sewer backup. The common reasons for sewer backup are the same as for clogged drains. The reasons include:
  • Disposing of feminine hygiene products unproperly
  • Flushing out toilet papers
  • Any tree roots or trenches interrupting sewage drain
  • Food waste, hair, soaps, etc.

What To Do If You Have A Plumbing Emergency In Your Home?

As soon as you’ve discovered any plumbing emergency, you should call the plumbing emergency services for your property’s repairs and restoration. Time Is Very Crucial when a disaster like this happens.

What are you supposed to do before the restoration service provider arrives?

How to Fix Water Damaged Walls?

It doesn't matter if your house is old or new, you're bound to face water damage at some point in your life. If you've already experienced a water leak in the past, there is a high chance you'll experience it in the future as well.

Plumbing leaks and water damaged walls are inevitable.

Why? Because the plumbing system in your house is operating non-stop. Pipes and appliances that use water may eventually start leaking due to the constant use. Plumbing leaks waste a lot of water. In fact, over 10,000 gallons of water is wasted every year in an average household's water leaks.

Water damaged walls may also result due to floods and storms. This kind of water damage is easy to identify. However, most of the time, the cause of water damage isn't always so obvious. If left unaddressed, water damage can destroy your plumbing system and cause structural issues to your drywall.

If you found water damaged walls in your house, it's safe to assume there's more damage than you can see on the outside. But the good news is that water damaged walls are repairable. You can call the professionals to repair the damaged walls for you.

Common Signs of Water Leaks

If you're reading this guide, you might have already spotted the water leak somewhere in your home. Yet, sometimes, water leaks may be hidden. These kinds of leaks are more dangerous. So, it's better to know the common signs of water leaks before it's too late.

The signs of water leakage include:
  • Musty odors
  • Softened drywall
  • Buckled ceilings and floors
  • Staining or discoloration
  • Standing water on the floor
  • Peeling, cracked, or bubbling paint and wallpaper
  • Visible mold growth on walls and baseboards
  • Warped walls

It's possible that the damage has already occurred to the drywall by the time you spot these signs. The gypsum drywall turns into a huge problem when it gets wet. The reason is that gypsum drywall is porous and soluble in water.

Water leakage leads to the growth of mold, bubbling, warping, stains, and deterioration. When the water reaches the drywall, it makes your walls and ceilings look unsightly. Eventually, it causes the wallboard to collapse and fall apart.

Steps to Repair the Water Damaged Walls

Follow these 7 steps to fix the water damaged walls:

  • 1.)   Locate the Leak and Fix it

You need to pay attention to your plumbing system and locate any possible water leaks. Faucets in the kitchen and bathrooms, showerheads, hot water heaters, washing machines, refrigerators, freezers, garbage disposals, and dishwashers are prone to leaks.

Use your eyes and ears to detect the water leaks. Look for soft spots and soggy areas, and hear if there is any sound of water leakage. Moreover, you can check your water meter and water bills.

The best way to confirm water leakage is to check your water meter. Turn off all the faucets and appliances that use water. Note your water meter readings. Avoid using water for at least an hour. Now, check the water meter readings again. If the reading is not the same, there's water leakage.

By looking for the above-mentioned signs of water leakage, you easily locate the leak. Once you do that, you have to fix the water leak.

If your faucet is leaking, you can replace the washer and fix the leak. However, if any of the plumbing pipes are leaking, you can apply epoxy putty as a temporary fix.

  • 2.) Dry Out the Walls
After fixing the leak, you have to quickly dry out the water damaged walls to prevent further damage. If the wall is damaged due to a small plumbing leak, you can simply use fans to dry out the affected area. Make sure the walls are completely dried.

However, if the wall has absorbed a lot of water, you should get a dehumidifier and some towels. Run the dehumidifier and start blotting the walls carefully. This will help to remove the moisture. But be sure not to press too hard as the drywall will already be too soft.

If is due to flooding, you should rent out a large-capacity dehumidifier to thoroughly dry out the walls, surrounding wood, and carpets.

  • 3.) Remove the Damaged Sections

Next, you have to start removing the damaged sections of the wall. Don't forget to put down tarps and drop cloths. It'll make clean up easier for you because the tarps will catch the removed pieces, dust, and debris.

Now, take drywall saw to cut out the damaged section. Make sure you don't cut any wires or damage the plumbing while cutting the wall. Also, it's important to note that cutting out the damaged part in the shape of a square or a rectangle is highly recommended.

It'll help you fit the patches easily and make the blending of the mud and taping work smoother for you.

How to Manage Damage to Your Home?

After removing the damaged section, check the studs and insulation to see whether they're completely dry or not.

By doing so, you can prevent the new piece of drywall from getting damaged due to the already present moisture.

  • 4.) Get Rid of the Mold

Water damaged drywalls are the perfect breeding spots for molds. Sometimes, the drywall has no structural defects in spite of the water damage. However, there is a high chance it might be infected with black mold growth.

So, once you have removed the damaged sections, disinfect the area and kill the mold. You can use diluted chlorine bleach to get rid of the mold and even the small water stains. Carefully scrub the drywall, and within a few hours, the mold will be killed.

  • 5.) Measure and Make Repairs

In the next step, you have to take the measurements of the wall from which the damaged section has been removed. Take 2 to 3 measurements and take the average. You can use this average measurement to cut a replacement piece of drywall. It's better to cut the replacement piece 2-inch longer and 2-inch wider than the hole.

Now, lay this replacement piece down with the backside facing up. Take a pencil and draw a line by measuring 1-inch from all four sides. Your replacement piece is ready, and it'll fit perfectly.

To fit the replacement piece, you have to place 4 drywall clips around the hole and secure them with a drywall screw. But be careful not to over-tighten the screws. Still, if the replacement piece isn't a perfect fit, place it against the hole and cut it out using a utility knife.

  • 6.) Blend the Seams, Prime, and Paint the Repaired Section

Take a mesh or paper tape and put it over the seams. Now, start to apply the first coat of the mud (a.k.a. joint compound). Properly cover the joint and blend the mud. It'll be followed by priming and painting.

Spread out the mud about 4 to 6-inches from the repaired area and let it dry for 12 to 24 hours. When the first coat is completely dry, wear a dust mask and take fine-grit sandpaper and a sanding block to sand off any ridges and high spots.

You'll have to apply a second coat as well. But before you do that, use a vacuum and wipe off the remaining dust. Now, apply the second coat, blend it properly, and let it dry again for 12 to 24 hours. Again, sand off the ridges.

The dried mud absorbs a lot of moisture, so you need to coat it with a primer that'll effectively seal the area. After that, you can start painting the newly repaired section.

You can either use a roller or paintbrush to paint the repaired area. Pour the paint into the paint tray and coat your paintbrush or roller. Then use a zigzag pattern to paint the surface to give your paint a flat finish.
After blending the seams, priming, and painting, the water damaged wall will be completely fixed.

  • 7.) Clean Up

Finally, take a shop vacuum and clean up all the dust and debris. Carefully pick up the tarps you had laid down and be sure not to spread around any pieces, debris, and paint on the tarps. Don't forget to clean the paintbrushes and dispose of all the used paint cans.

You can use warm, soapy water to thoroughly clean the tools, paintbrushes, and roller covers. Once you have done all that, it's time to remove the painter's tape. You can prevent damage to the fresh paint by removing the tape at a 45-degree angle.

Water Damage Restoration:
Why is it important to deal asap with water damage?

Water is an essential commodity for life. We can’t even imagine a life without water. But, the same water may have destructive consequences for life, business, and property when it gets out of control. One of the many damaging water phenomena is water damage in homes due to several factors.

Water damage is one of the many causes of concern for every urban or suburban household. The leakage of water at home can cause a plethora of new issues. The issues will become impossible to handle if not immediately overpowered.

There may be various reasons and factors that cause water damage, from leaking appliances to severe cold that cause the pipes to burst. Thunderstorms, hurricanes, and cyclones are natural phenomena and, humans have not been able to control these natural calamities. But, there are various other causes for  and, if taken seriously, you can avert a loss to life and property.
Even though natural calamities give a severe blow to our structures, we still can try our best to keep the situation under control.

Let’s head towards the most common reasons for water damage to ascertain how you can handle the situation in an emergency.

7 Common Reasons of Water Damage

When water changes its roots, everyone panics. People failing to understand the causes cannot take preventive measures. It is in your interest to know as to what the reasons behind a flood and water damage you are how you can deal with the situation practically.

1. Harsh Weather

Every winter brings with it a host of new concerns for people. One of the many causes of strain is the freezing of water in pipes. Cold and harsh weather slows down the water flow within pipes and, when the weather becomes even more severe, the water freezes in pipes.

The frozen water damages the pipes, and in many cases, they burst out. A sudden change in weather, when the temperature starts increasing, the ice melts. As a result, water starts flowing out of the pipes from the broken points.

In order to prevent the water from freezing in pipes, cold water should be allowed to dip from the faucets. It will keep the water flowing, and the chances of water damage in cold and harsh weather will reduce to a great extent.

2. Open Holes to let the water out

Trash and dust in open holes can fail the entire plumbing of your home or office. You should make sure that all the holes are covered, and there is no way of trash getting into the holes and blocking the water flow.

3. Leaking Water from  Garbage Disposal

Leaking garbage disposal is quite frustrating because it causes the floor or cabinet to sink and become overwhelmingly wet. Failing to fix the leakage on an urgent basis can cause water flow from other areas. Worn-out gaskets, leaky sink flange, damaged drain lines, loose seals or pipes, broken dishwasher connection, and cracked body are some of the reasons for leaking garbage disposal.

You can take some measures to prevent the leaking of garbage disposal like not dumping the hard waste into the disposal unit, avoiding salty or fibrous food waste into the disposal, and performing regular clean-up.

4. Leakage from Water Heater

Leaking from water heaters is another cause of concern for the homeowners and the residents. People usually don’t pay heed to a small amount of water dripping from the body, drain valve, inlets, or outlets. You can spot the leakage from the body easily, but the inlets and outlets are located on the water heater, so they are more susceptible to damage as compared to the other components.

You can only take preventive measures if you are fully aware of the condition of your water heater. When the heater looks rusty, the water quality changes, or some unusual noise is heard, be alert because these are the common signs of potential water leaking within the heater.

When you have noticed that the leakage from the water heater has become obvious, and you have made your mind to fix the problem, you must, first of all, try to detect precisely where the leak is. Now turn off the power and drain the water tank. Turning off the power supply is a life-saving step, don’t even get closer to the tank or the surrounding area before completely cutting the electric supply.

5. Plumbing Leaks Problems

GTA Restoration provides unmatchable plumbing solutions

Plumbing is not everyone’s job. Even people who claim to be experts in the field sometimes commit blunders while plumbing. Erroneous and faulty plumbing in buildings, homes, and kitchens can lead to irreversible consequences.

They say, and rightly so, that prevention is always better than the cure. It is, therefore, advisable to make every cent sure that the emergency plumbing services technicians you are hiring are experts in the field and have a reputation and a proven record of perfect and quality plumbing and restoration services.

6. Leaky Roof

“Don’t be angry with the rain. It simply does not know how to fall upward”. You may have heard this quote or read it somewhere but, still, you are angry with the rain without realizing that the problem is not the rain but your leaky roof.

Yes, even a little downpour and a small amount of water boil your blood and, you want to scream. Roof leakage is one of the most common problems people face during the rainy season. The leakage can further augment the water damage in other parts of the home if not fixed quickly.

The dust particles and small amounts of trash may block the water flow in pipes, and the gutter will gush out. Not fixing the leakage from the water heater may also trigger roof leaking because the water keeps accumulating in small holes. During summer seasons, the small amount of water does not harm because it evaporates by sunlight but, in winter or continuous rainy weather, the water finds its way through the ceiling.

7. Condensation

Condensation in the air conditioner causes water damage. The AC is responsible for cooling air in the room by pulling warm air over the evaporator coil. The refrigerant inside the coils absorbs heat and, the temperature exchange in return, causes condensation. Changing filters very often and AC servicing can prevent water leakage.

If You Don’t Act Immediately, The Loss Will be Irreversible

Water damage in homes can bring life to a grinding halt. In most cases, the property gets badly affected, the kitchen floor or the cabinets sink in water, walls get wet and, the ceiling gets structurally damaged.
Unless people are fully aware of the harms and damages of the leaking water, they usually don’t bother to take preventive measures.
Listed below are some common problems arising out of the water damage.

It directly threatens life

Accumulation of water or even tiny droplets near electric appliances can be hazardous for life. Many instances of electrocution due to the combination of water and power come to light on a routine basis. Broken and damaged pipelines can fill the basement area, causing a flood-like situation in homes. Children playing on lawns can be the victims of water damage.

It can cause health problems

Continuous dripping of water and leaking of water tanks pose serious health challenges. Disease-causing bacteria nurture in the water, causing various diseases. When the bacteria get into the broken pipes, it can contaminate the tanks and other water reservoirs.
The pathogenic organisms and other contaminants cause serious health problems like diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, amebiasis, hepatitis, and worm infections.

Damage to property

The first of the immediate losses of the water damage is the loss of valuable property. The sudden and uncontrolled water flow can damage the furniture, expensive equipment, carpets, floor tiles, walls, and wallpapers.

Paint and color peel off

When water changes its course by making its way to the walls and ceiling, the paint peel-off problem is obvious. The paint peeling occurs due to condensation in walls and humidity due to the water leaking from the pipes. Poor plumbing makes the situation even worse so, it is always recommended hiring the services of experts and highly trained technicians.

Growth of black mold

Black mold starts growing within 24 hours of the water damage. High moistened areas are the perfect nurseries for the black mold. When the black mold starts developing, it releases spores into the air. The inhaled spores can damage the lungs of living beings.

To prevent the further growth of the mold, first of all, detect the leakage, get it fixed immediately and dry the affected area. If the infected material cannot be cleaned or dried, it is advisable to remove it and replace it with the new resilient one.

Why is it good to call an emergency plumber before mold starts growing?

  • Save your life and property.
As we have already mentioned above, water damage seriously affects valuable property and poses risks to lives. It is imperative to call the emergency restoration services and request them to resolve the problem before it gets too late. Calling the emergency restoration service is highly recommended because trying to fix it on your own may temporarily work but, it will not last long. After some time, the black mold would start developing, which would aggravate the problem.

  • Get rid of the leakage.
When there is a permanent solution available, why go for a temporary fix? There are plenty of risks involved with the water damage problem. It is better to get rid of the issue once and for all.
Emergency services by experts technicians can save precious life and valuable property. Quick fixes don’t always work, so it is in your interest to pick your phone and call the emergency plumbing service providers to get rid of the leakage.

  • No more insects and bugs
Harmful insects and bugs nurture in a moist and wet environment. The water accumulation due to leaking pipes serves as the breeding ground for the insects. The attic becomes the perfect place for the bugs when water starts dripping from the ceiling. Permanently solving the leakage problem can prevent the growth of black mold in the attic and, it can prevent the insects and bugs breeding there.

  • Solve your plumbing problems once and for all
There may be many reasons for the poor plumbing. Most of the common reasons for the leakage and water damage are the poor plumbing of the structure. Untrained technicians start the work without a proper examination of the building and the environment of the locality. To make the situation even worse, they use substandard material.

They have done whatever wrong they could. But, now is the time to act rationally without wasting even a single minute. Book an appointment with the consultant or make a phone call to the immediate response team to fix all the plumbing issues of your building.

  • Save your hard-earned money.
Eventually, it is the money that matters. Hiring unprofessional technicians and using substandard material in plumbing will not save you money. These practices will cause you to lose in the long run. It is always better to hire a highly trained team of professionals for a permanent and lasting solution.

As soon as water damage and leakage happen, contact the emergency restoration services to fix the issue before black mold develops. Any further delay will cost you extra because the water damages everything that comes in its way.

Sewage—how it will mess your life up, and how to fix it

20/2/2021

Sewage Cover Toronto

Sewage backup can mess your life up, Tips how to handle it!

Let’s be honest, sewage issues are common. And the sooner they are addressed, the better. Here’s a fact we think everyone needs to know: sewage matter contains microbial germs and fungi that have adverse effects on all organisms around it.

As humans, we are are prone to getting affected by the numerous diseases and microorganisms carried by contaminated sewage material. The wastewater in sewers and underground ducts should be transferred from one end to another by using effective environmental engineering methods.

In the case of an unexpected pipe burt, it is always wise to inform authorities and call your local emergency sewage cleanup services to help you get things back in order as soon as possible.

If the greywater contamination is exposed to the environment, it can drastically contaminate fresh air in surrounding areas. Uncovered sewage spills pollute the environment and affect your indoor and outdoor air quality.

Below, is everything you need to know about sewage, possible issues that can arise, and how to efficiently solve them before they turn into a full blown disaster.

But first, what is sewage?

Good question. We’re glad you asked.

In technical terms, sewage is any form of waste water that travels in properly designed channels and conveyors.

Sewage water includes biological waste flushed by humans, water from domestic purposes, etc. Because of the nature of sewage lines, you can always expect to have an unwanted outbreak causing disturbances in your house, area, or even commercial set-ups.

Whether it be our flush tanks or kitchen sinks, or even planters placed in the garden, they can all add up and cause blockage due to sewage. The sewage is classified upon its general characteristics, volume, and rate of discharge.

Every sewage matter has a physical and chemical state, which adds to the toxic content, making it chemically and biologically unhealthy for human health. Being exposed to sewage matter has adverse effects on mental and physical health. It is always advisable to treat any sewage breakouts or blockages on a priority basis, and the cleanup process is best carried out by professionals who know what they are doing.

After-all, you don’t want to pay to deal with recurring sewage issues, do you?

But wait, what even is sewage contamination?

Again, we’re super glad you asked. So, wastewater from bathrooms and laundries eventually ends up in polluted sewer pipelines. If you face sewage related problems often, chances are that the area you live in does not have proper sewage cleaners and maintenance supplies. In that case, the accumulated water starts developing fungi and other microbial germs, which degenerate water molecules and convert them into harmful compounds.

The absolute lack of fresh air exchange due to pipelines being fully covered can lead to sewage contamination, which ends up affecting the quality of the pipes, eroding its internal surfaces.

Sewage contamination can directly disturb your freshwater supplies, as contaminated water has a smirky and unpleasant smell, which readily diffuses through your entire house and neighborhood. Sewage mainly consists of water, biological waste, and chemicals from detergents.

They all add up and form deadly compounds and mixtures that can affect your health and cause respiratory problems. Sewage contamination problems are just not limited to houses and apartments. The high influx of wastewater from public buildings and hotels increases the volume of stagnant water, leading to severe contamination.

Sewage should be removed and disinfected to eliminate the chances of unwanted diseases. Chemicals such as ammonia, nitrates, Sulphur, and phosphorus add up to form sewage waste and release harmful gases in nature.

When a sever is left exposed to a residential or commercial area, it causes environmental pollution and damages all vulnerable infrastructure and holdings. If the sewage is being removed and transported to landfill sites, it should be done according to standard operating procedures. Exposed and leftover sewage contains bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microbial elements.
Flooding Image Toronto

Can Excessive Flooding Cause Sewage Backup?

Excessive flooding and torrential rain can cause your sewer lines to back up. If your town is affected by long spells of rainfall, there is a high chance of your local sewers getting flooded and clogged often.

Unexpected snowfalls and hail storms can also cause the water level to rise and drain into your local sewers and main lines. If you’re used to drinking water straight from the tap, here’s some news for you: bottled water is far more reliable in the worst flooding conditions, as there is a hundred percent chance that your freshwater line is contaminated and compromised.

Unexpected rainfall and excessive flooding always cause problems for people living on the town's downstream side. Contaminated water and debris are more likely to accumulate in your underground sewer pipelines, causing more problems.

If there is a high flux of incoming water, the reverse flow can penetrate your home's main sewer line and flood your basements and washrooms on the ground level. Water is a miscible liquid, which can easily flow and seep through minute openings and disturb your waterproof coatings.

If a sewer backup is being caused due to excessive flooding, it would contain natural debris and much more than just your biological waste.

How to know detect a clogged or compromised sewer line?

If your main sewer line is compromised and clogged, you will eventually start noticing the slow wastewater runoff from drains in your washroom, garages, and kitchens and pick up on something being off.

The flow of wastewater from surfaces would be slow, and you might hear gurgling sounds as water penetrates through the drain.

When a sewer line is clogged, the waste and contaminated water flows in the reverse direction, penetrating your drains and into the kitchen and bathroom floors and is most likely to stir up chaos at your house. In the case of clogging, you would easily sense foul odors coming through your washroom drains

Looking for professional sewage cleanup services in Toronto? Our team won’t disappoint you! Contact us today.

Here’s the thing; cleaning up remains and sewage by yourself might seem easy, but it is not! Proper handling of solid waste and sewage should be done before it has been transported or cleaned. We, humans, are prone to deadly diseases and viruses when exposed to sewage material and garbage.

It is vital to treat all infected and affected areas to prevent biohazards such as parasites, mold, bacteria, fungi, and viruses. A simple sewer backup can cause many uncertain hassles and disturb your daily life.

If the sewage has accumulated on your bathroom or kitchen floor, try to close that parameter before starting the proper sewage cleanup process:

The mentioned Standard Operating Protocols should be followed to sustain the environment and complete the tedious sewage cleanup process:

  1. Evacuate the Perimeter: When a sewer line or a plumbing fixture explodes, evacuate the entire area. Aged senior citizens, children, and pets should be removed and shifted to another room or space.
  2. Shutdown all Utilities: If you or your area has faced an enormous sewer backup, call for a shutdown, and eliminate the risks of short circuits and gas leaks. Ensure the freshwater supplies are safe and are shut down temporarily. Your contaminated sewage waste must not penetrate through freshwater supplies and Ro purifiers.
  3. Dewatering and Removal: Removal of contaminated sewage water should be done by dewatering pumps, which can infiltrate through narrow plumbing accessories and remove the blockage. If an interruption in water pipes causes the sewage blockage, try to consult a plumber and remove the blockage. A simple metallic object or a plastic toy can be the reason for the massive blockage, leading to the accumulation of biological waste and sewage contamination. After all the water is removed, then only try to address the backup and unclog the sewer drain.
  4. Removal of Debris: After the area is cleaned up and dried, remove debris and large objects affecting the cleanup process. If a sewage cluster is accumulated inside your house, remove all vulnerable furniture and other items. The affected materials should be removed and dumped, as they contain germs and viruses. All soil and shovel dirt should be gathered in disposable plastic bags and directly tossed in the garbage.
  5. Cross Ventilation: When the process of cleanup starts, try to open all windows and doors in the surrounding. The incoming fresh air would settle down, and the unpleasant odor would escape into the external environment. Remove the sunshade and blinds, so the sun's direct heat and light energy can penetrate through the sewage mold and kill unwanted bacteria and germs.
  6. Removal of Uncontaminated Items: If by chance any furniture or object remains uncontaminated, cover it or try to remove it from the parameter. All food, vegetables, utensils, and crockery should be removed from the scene.
  7. Chlorination: Chlorinate the area with proper disinfectants and chlorine to counter the spread of bacteria and germs in the surrounding. Spraying of disinfectants would eliminate unseen micro organism which can decompose in your environment and cause health problems.
  8. Unclogging of Drains: If you have identified the blockage's reason, start planning how to tackle it. Use proper tools and safety equipment while opening and dismantling the drain or the pipe. Do not break the source directly; ensure your main water supply is turned down and no water is flowing in the line. For this purpose, call trained plumbing engineers and labor, removing the blockage without causing any more damages. Removing the blockage is a tedious and most challenging job, as you never know when underground conceal pipes burst and tear apart. Use specific tools to dismantle the pipeline from another end, and then try to push in vacuums, which can suck the dirt and small particles. Use wired hangers if a metal or an object causes the blockage. If the blockage is in your sink drain, pour hot boiling water and dishwashing detergent with it. This might be effective and clear the drain, dissolving the blockage. Use plunger in worse situations to extract the clogged particles, and add strong acids to eliminate the bottleneck within few minutes. After your sewer line or drain pipes are cleared, wash them thoroughly with a steady supply of fresh and clear water.
  9. Screwup Pipe Fittings: After final inspection, cover all channels and pipe fittings, and ensure you tighten them using sufficient tools and adhesives. Look for any unwanted leakages or bursts that might erode shortly and cause more problems. Run all safety and maintenance checks after your sewage lines and conveyance pipe fittings are in order and ready to be operational again.
  10. Air Fresheners and Disinfectants: After a severe sewage backup, you need to apply air fresheners which can readily infiltrate air particles and spread a sweet fragrance. If the sewage outburst was on a town level, it is advisable by authorities to have that entire town fumigated by air fresheners and disinfectant sprays. It is imperative to eliminate foul odor before it starts to affect the fresh air in the environment.
  11. Structural Drying: Removal of moisture from wooden and concrete surfaces is the process of structural drying. Vacuum cleaners and high-intensity blowers are used to dry the entire house or area. Moisture settles on surfaces exposed which were exposed to floods and sewage backups. To remove moisture and dry the whole surface, you require centrifugal air exhausts and high-volume axial fans. It would be best if you got your structural drying immediately done, as mold and moisture settle onto wood fixtures and decompose them completely.

What causes drains to get clogged?

Clogging is caused due to complex particles, that accumulate within any surface and solidify. Problems due to clogging are experienced in kitchen drains, washroom gutters, and general sewers. Usually, we do not dispose of the remaining food in garbage chutes--like we probably should, and instead, we prefer dumping them in the sink, which ends up, well, not somewhere it was supposed to.

Bathroom accessories, such as sanitary napkins, and  tissues are dumped into flush tanks instead of dustbins, which get jammed in pipe fittings and cause severe problems. Domestic waste accumulates on the internal surface, leading to the clogging of drains and sewers.

Things like meaty and greasy food deposits can cause instant coagulation. Seasoned coffee grounds could expand and form uncompressible lumps if not correctly drained. Bones, veggies, and poultry can add up to the mixture, causing severe clogging issues.

Besides, food particles, napkins, toilet tissue rolls, razor blades, bottle caps, and hair strands can easily cause a sewage backup. Every daily use item should be disposed off properly to avoid drainage issues and uncertain sewer clogging.

The excessive use of draining pipes and dishwashers can also cause clogging, as food complex food substances require sufficient time to break and travel along the sewer lines. It is always recommended to install a modern and fully equipped plumbing systems that are efficient at their jobs.

A word on health risks caused by sewage backup

Sewage backups are a serious concern, and should be addressed on a priority basis. If a sewage backup affects a home or an entire vicinity, professional sewage backup services must be immedietly called. A contaminated sewage backup contains infected biohazards, which can quickly transfer via nostrils and mouth through inhalation. Bacterial fungi can start affecting human skin, causing rough patches and skin diseases.

Contaminated sewage backup can cause severe health problems such as Hepatitis, Dermatitis, Weils disease, Legionnaires Disease, Gastroenteritis, Allergic Alveolitis, and Asthama. The spread of bacterial microbes is likely to infiltrate through the respiratory tract, causing breathing and respiratory problems. Senior citizens and kids are most at risk when a sewage backup occurs in homes or nearby areas. The ones having weak respiratory tracts are advised to wear protective masks and take safety precautions. Parasites, mold, bacteria, fungi, and viruses are found in contaminated sewage waste. Untreated sewage waste damages vital organs; the Liver, Kidneys, and bloodstream. Pathogens from sewage waste can seep through skin pores, causing itching and patches on your skin.

Sewer gas poisoning is widespread in areas, which are affected by severe flooding and rainfalls. Hydrogen sulfide is a poisonous gas released from contaminated sewage waste and smells like rotten eggs. Sewer gas causes instant eye irritation, nausea, and difficulty breathing.

Is exposure to black water harmful?

Blackwater is composed of chemicals and biological wastes, including feces, urine, and anal cleansing water. Blackwater contains pathogens and other microbial substances which can directly affect your health and property. Wastewater is a composition of blackwater and grey-water.

If the blackwater is not treated immediately, it may cause severe health concerns and can sometimes even result in death. To remove blackwater and its bacteria, you need professional disinfectant and cleaning services, where providers can make adequate use of chemical acids to neutralize the impact.

Exposure to blackwater can sometimes even cause deady infections and complications due to parasites and bacteria.

How to prevent your property during uncertain sewage backups?

People must run quality checks on their basements and foundations in a severe flooding situation and check for cracks or seepage patches. Bitumen coats should be applied beforehand to waterproof the ground surfaces and basements in contact with the ground.

Reduce greasy washing products such as oil containers and utensils, which can go down the mainline and intensify the sewage backup situation. Check through all plumbing fixtures, raise all flush tanks, washing machines, and sinks in your basement.

Install water metering fixtures to keep a close check on water inflow and outflow from your property. When you know your main sewer line is compromised, use water effectively, and refrain from washing cars in the garage.

Sewage Backup Prevention

With time, people must ensure to update their plumbing systems and shift towards mechanical working systems. If you have an extended courtyard in the back of your house, avoid planting trees that can spread up roots and eventually disturb your sewage pipeline, causing severe clogging.

Maintain and repair your concealed pipe fittings, replace old and rusted pipes with new PVC plastic pipes. PVC plastic fitting and pipes are highly reliable and durable.

Always keep the emergency sewer clean, which is ideal for situations caused by excessive flooding and thunder rain storms. Get your internal sewer system timely inspected by professional plumbers and engineers, clean grease, grass, and debris accumulated with time.

Refrain from connecting areaway drain fixtures or pumps from sump tanks to the sewer line. Permanently repair and replace plumbing fixtures that are leaking or are compromised due to any fault.Installation of a backwater prevention valve is extremely vital;prevention valves allow wastewater to flow out of your sanitary lines and do not allow water to reverse back into the pipes.

Is sewage backup covered under homeowners insurance?

Only a few insurance companies cover sewage backup under home insurance policies if only the payer has added extra benefits under his premium amount.

People living in flood-prone areas are catered under homeowners insurance claims, where they pay an increased premium amount which is likely to be claimed for renovation purposes.

A homeowners insurance coversdamages done by water from sewer or drains. Structural damages and repair costs can be claimed under your homeowners' insurance benefits.

Why is sanitization important in sewage cleanup?

The essential process of sanitization includes sanitization of the floor, wall, and external surfaces. All affected surfaces are thoroughly washed with hot steam water, disinfectants, and other chemicals.

Microbial bacteria are microscopic, cannot be seen under the naked eye, and can accumulate on any surface. Disinfectants must penetrate through tiny pores and eliminate bacterial settlements.

Sodium hypochlorite, known as bleach, is commonly used as a disinfectant to sanitize almost all surfaces.

Sewage backup produces harmful toxins and gases which settle into furniture, wood, and other materials. It is mandatory to have a sanitized environment before returning to everyday life.

Who can help In sewage cleanup?

Sewage cleanup is a very tedious and challenging process. You need to examine the situation first and then close the entire area for the local public. Sewage cleanup can take days and extended person-hours to revive the area and clean up contaminated sewage waste and debris. Damage control and restoration services include engineers, supervisors, plumbers, cleaners, debris removers, machinery, and much more.

If the sewage backup is caused due to leakage of the septic tank, you will require water resource engineers to analyze the leak and start the recovery phase. Plumbers would assist you if your sewer line has caused sewage backup, cleaners would always play the most vital part, as they are the ones who walk down through the debris and molds to find the clogged point and dismantle it completely. Dewatering machinery and lifters would assist you in dewatering the area and removing the accumulated waste.

It is wise to consult a commercial waste management organization that can help you in sewage cleanup and offer other vital services. If the affected area is the size of a room, you can start by yourself, but you must refrain from doing it yourself in worse situations.

With assistance from experienced individuals, you can undergo a complete sewageprocess. Local volunteers can help in relocating families to safe stations and provide them basic first aid.

What to Wear During a Sewage Cleanup Activity?

While performing sewage cleanup activities, individuals must wear personal protective gears that include; rubber boots, gloves, and face shield.

Cleaning equipment and clothes should be cleaned and sanitized with proper disinfectants and chemicals. The workers and the general public should be wearing personal protective gear to protect themselves from poisonous gases and toxins.

What to Do After a Successful Sewage Cleanup?

Sewage cleanup is a challenging and tedious task. After a successful cleanup process, you can revert to your everyday life but ensure you follow recommended protocols to have a hassle-free life.
  1. Call for Dry Cleaning Services: You must get all carpeted flooring, and rugs dry cleaned before reuse.
  2. Clean Undamaged Utensils and Canned Food: All undamaged utensils should be cleaned with disinfectant solutions and sanitizers. If the canned food is safe and fresh, you can wash and use them.
  3. Use Air Fresheners: After a sewage cleanup, it is advisable to have automatic air fresheners placed in every room, which can help you in breathing fresh air.
  4. Replace Damaged Goods: Goods that are damaged should be removed immediately.
  5. Inspection of Mechanical and Plumbing Fixtures: After a successful sewage cleanup process, you are advised to check all values and pipe fittings. Emergency drain valves and backwater return valves should be checked. The overall inspection includes checking almost every fixture which was replaced after the sewage backup.

Which items should be discarded?

It is important to start fresh, discard all disposable items which got affected by sewage backup. Home-canned food in the refrigerator should be removed, as the odor is most likely to get settled in home-packed edibles.

Unpacked items, which were left exposed to the polluted environment should be discarded. Fruits, vegetables, bakery items, and liquids should be discarded. Items that smell foul should be avoided and discarded in plastic bags.

Final Words:

Sewage cleanup is a challenging and technical task. You require commercial cleanup services to provide you prompt and professional services.

During the process of sewage cleanup, the general public should cooperate with cleaners and supervisors. Contaminated sewage waste should be cautiously removed and transported to a dumping site.

It is advisable to use environmentally friendly materials which do not affect the discharge of water. Clogging and blockage of drains and sewers are caused due to our negligence. To have a sustainable water supply process, we need to ensure that we reduce the use of substances that are likely to accumulate and be the reason for the blockage.

Dispose of all edible waste, which is greasy and expands when exposed to water.

Renovate Your Old Bathroom: Make it an All-Inclusive Spa and Steam Bath

What if you could build a professional grade steam bath in your own home?  Many homeowners are already enjoying the health benefits and comfort of an integrated steam bath bathroom.  This article will walk you through the basics of realizing the benefits of your very own private steam bath.

Once you know the basics of a steam bath bathroom, you will find that such an addition to your home is not cost prohibitive and is relatively easy to accomplish, provided you consult with an experienced renovation professional.  Your renovation professional will have a clear understanding of your needs and your project.

Steam bathrooms are not another fad, their judicious use of water, combined with their health benefits, are causing people to rethink their bathing routines.  Imagine your morning routine starting with a steam sauna.

Steam Baths in History

The concept of the steam bath has been around for millennia.  Some cultures made use of natural hot springs and others, without nearby geothermal activity, constructed their own versions; the native American "Sweat Lodge" for instance.  Common to all of them regardless of time or place is the health and relaxation benefits they confer.

The Health Benefits of Steam Baths

That steam bathing is popular around the world should come as no surprise when considering how the practice helps to improve health and well-being.  Among the many health benefits of regular steam bathing are decreased stress, increased relaxation, breathing improvements, improved skin and, not least, because of these other health benefits it should be no surprise that sleep will come easier and be of a higher quality.

Other Benefits of a Steam Bathroom

Aside from all the health advantages to having your own steam bathroom, there are also some money and time saving benefits.  The personal steam bathroom of today reduces water consumption.  Taking a quick rinse shower before your steam bath and then one after saves the many gallons of water that would otherwise have gone down the drain – only a small quantity of water is necessary to immerse you into a fully satisfying steam bath environment.

A steam bathroom is an integrated tiled unit which makes it considerably easier to clean than a standard compartmentalized bathroom.

Also, having a high-quality steam bathroom can greatly improve the resale value of your home.

Types of Steam Baths and Installations

For the homeowner there are two approaches to installing your steam bath.  The first method is to purchase a prefabricated kit from a big box retailer like Home Depot.  The second method is to have a custom installation; this can be accomplished by attempting to do it yourself or by hiring a professional contractor.

The pros and cons of any of these methods are dependent on what kind of time and expense you are willing to incur.  Consider that even a kit will likely require a professional installation service, and so the expense on the back end could well rival that of a custom install.

If the DIY route is chosen, then care must be taken to ensure plenty of time to study the requirements, materials and plans for the install.  A missed step or slapdash workmanship can cause severe structural damage to a house, not to mention the wasted cost of materials should the unit need to be torn down and replaced.

Hiring a professional is generally the preferred method.  A professional has a depth of knowledge and experience to complete a high-quality install on time and on budget.  A professional Steam bath installer understand the local building codes and is also licensed and bonded so that you are covered by your homeowner's insurance should anything go wrong.

How a Modern Steam Bathroom Works, the Steam Generating Unit

Aside from materials and labor, the most expensive item for a Steam Bath is the steam generating unit.  There are many units available on the market and they are tailored to different needs.  If the Steam Bath space is to be small, then a smaller unit is, of course, the best option.  The installation professional will provide the best options for the size of the space.

Further, most unit now come with remote controllers so that the atmosphere is readily adjusted at will, without having to continually adjust the unit manually.

Ask a Professional for Advice

When it comes to something as durable and convenient as your very own steam bath it is best to consult with a professional.  An install professional can serve as a valuable guide through whit is a very complex process.  By getting the most reliable information available you will ensure that your Steam Bath is not simply built to standards of the highest quality, but that you will have saved money over the course of the install.

The installation professional will also advise you if a kit might be a better option than a custom installation.  Moreover, your professional will be there to back up their work should you ever need it.

Common Signs of Water Damage?

Common Signs of Water Damage?

Water damage can leave you with a costly bill and can result in irreversible damage. Fortunately, there are some common signs to look out for, so you can catch it early if it does happen and get it repaired as soon as possible.

Your Ceiling and Wall Paint is Peeling and Warping

Take a look around your home and examine the walls and ceilings. If they are water damaged, you may notice that the wallpaper or paint is peeling or even has a bubbling effect. More often than not, this is because of excess moisture. Water-filled bubbles form, and can be large or small depending on the extent of the water damage. Even small bubbles should be inspected and addressed immediately. The bubbling effect can be especially found in bathrooms and kitchens. Even tasks as simple as boiling a pot of water can cause water damage to the walls, especially if there is condensation. If you have a painted overhang above your stove, you can find these water-filled bubbles as well.

If you have water damage, you also may notice that your drywall is warping or your ceiling feels soft and spongy to the touch. Warped drywall is never good as it can lead to structural damage and ruin the integrity of the drywall. You won’t be able to hang shelving or anything heavy on the drywall as it will turn to mush and crumble. Plus, anything you already had hanging on the drywall, such as an expensive TV can fall to the ground and become damaged. You are looking at damages beyond the drywall itself which is why it is important to address it as soon as you notice it.

Buckled Hardwood Floors

If your floors are looking a little odd and not as they used to, trust your gut as it may be water damage. What constitutes odd? You may notice that your floors are what experts call ‘cupping’. This is when the sides of your floorboards are higher than the centre of the floorboards. This generally occurs when moisture builds up inside the wood and swells it while weighing down the centre. You will notice the opposite effect when too much moisture is removed from the floorboards and they shrink. In addition, your hardwood floors can ‘crown’ which is the opposite of cupping. Moisture builds up inside the boards and the centre of the wood is higher than the sides of the wood.

If you notice your hardwood floors ‘buckling’ than this could be a sign of water damage. When your hardwood flooring buckles, the wood will lift from the subflooring several inches in multiple places or one.

You must take into consideration how your wood flooring was installed. Sometimes it is not due to water damage at all, but to wear and tear and improper installation. Hardwood flooring needs time to get used to the environment and the elements it will be exposed to. If this doesn’t happen and it is installed before it is ready, cupping, crowning, and buckling can occur as well.

Visibly Stained Ceilings and Floors

Take a look at your ceilings and floors and take note of any stains. Feel your carpets as well and if they are wet to the touch, that is definitely a sign that a leak has occurred and there may be water damage. If the stains on your ceilings are yellow or brown and are various shapes and sizes, that is a sign of water damage. Take note of where the stain is as well. If the stain is underneath your bathroom where the toilet or shower is, that increases the chances of it being water damage from a leak.

Mold Growth

A tell-tale sign that there is water damage in your home is mold as mold can only develop if there is a source of moisture. You may find mold spores on your hardwood floors, inside the wall and outside the wall, and on the ceiling. Check your basement thoroughly as well as most people find Mold there. It can be a variety of colours, the most common being black mold. Keep in mind that no mold does not mean you are safe from water damage and it doesn’t exist. Mold is highly dangerous to your health and can even lead to death with long-term exposure, so it is not an issue to be taken lightly.

For most cases, will only begin to grow if the source of the water damage has been damp for a long time. In this case, you may have water damage long before you notice it.

Bad Odours Smells

Don’t ignore that musty smell you have been sensing for weeks, as it may be related to water damage. The scent tends to grow stronger the closer you are to the source of the water damage. The smell can be coming from the mold resulting from the water damage, or the water damage itself if it is from a leak from a sewer pipe. Sewage is a biohazard so this should be addressed as soon as possible. It is not safe to be exposed to a biohazard for any period of time.

High Water Bill

This one is not really a direct sign of water damage, but something to look out for. A higher utility bill without intentional use of excessive water is usually a sign of a leak. If there is a leak, then there could quite possibly be water damage you haven’t noticed yet.

Take an extra moment out of your day, if you can, to analyze your home and look out for water damage. Check for leaks as well in every room, especially the bathroom, kitchen, basement and laundry room. If you do spot water damage in your home, don’t ignore it. Water damage can become more expensive the longer it is left, and could even be detrimental to your health. Call a professional as soon as possible to confirm the water damage and get it repaired.

When Do You Need to Call an Emergency Plumber?

When Do You Need to Call an Emergency Plumber?

Why it’s Important to Avoid Water Damage

Water damage is more than just an ugly stain on the wall- though that’s a pretty good reason to prevent it as well. Water damage can seriously harm the structural integrity of your home, electrical, and piping systems. It can also lead to mold, which can cause serious health problems including respiratory illness.

If you are in the Greater Toronto Area, here are the Top Five Water Damage Service Providers in Toronto.

Potentially Unsafe Conditions

If the plumbing issue is leading to unsafe conditions in the home, then it should be considered a plumbing emergency. An example would be a bad smell in the yard, which could indicate a sewer or septic tank backup. In that case, it would only be a matter of time the waste reached the home and started to damage its structure.

Another unsafe condition would be the presence of mold. Mold taints the air quality of a home and can lead to severe respiratory illness. If you suspect mold, it is vitally important to call a mold removal service as soon as possible.

If you aren’t sure how to check for mold, here are five great tips to detect mold growth.

Common Plumbing Emergencies

Overflowing sink, drain, toilet, or bathtub

An overflowing sink, drain, toilet, or bathtub is quite a bit more serious than a clogged one. While the cause of an overflow can be simple, it can also indicate much more severe issues with your plumbing system.  Step one is to turn off the water to prevent further flooding. Step two is to call your emergency plumber and make sure that the situation is taken care of as quickly as possible.

If the problem is a clogged toilet, make sure that no one in the home flushes in the meantime, as it can make the situation worse.

Burst or leaking pipes

Burst pipes and leaking pipes are both considered serious plumbing problems. If a burst pipe is left untreated, you may end up having to replace your entire plumbing system. If a leaking pipe is left untreated, it could lead to flooding.

Gross smells

If you’re smelling something strange or gross when you turn on the water, this can indicate a serious and potentially harmful plumbing problem. A bad smell usually indicates a problem with the sump pump, septic tank, or sewer system. It could mean that there is backup occurring. Do not use any water in your home and be sure to call an emergency plumber immediately!

Conclusion

We naturally want to put off calling an emergency service, as it can be quite costly. If you’re questioning whether it really is a plumbing emergency, ask yourself:
  • Is there a risk of water damage?
  • Are there unsafe conditions?

If the answer is yes, then it’s time to call an emergency plumber. Some common plumbing emergencies include:
  • Overflowing sink, drain, toilet, or bathtub
  • Burst or leaking pipes
  • Gross smells

Fogging Could be a Violation of Federal Law!

Picture
Fogging Could be a Violation of Federal Law!

If the cleaning company you just hired is simply “fogging,” then they're not following EPA guidelines, not sanitizing your facility, and you could be liable.

Hiring a professional cleaning company that understands this urgency is vital for your business. Be cautious with companies that broadcast “fogging” as being a fully effective method of disinfecting.

Doing otherwise could mean breaking a federal law in unsafe disinfection practices. An EPA approved list known as “List N” reveals the most effective chemicals that require pre-cleaning the surface with soap and water before you spray the disinfectant product.

The extra time spent preparing the space will ensure that the EPA approved disinfectant does it’s job.  And more importantly is, using an improper application of the disinfectants can lead companies to a false sense of security, and an increase in health hazards and it is not effective at reducing the risk of the spread of COVID-19.F

As the days are gradually increasing, the people are slowly getting impacted by the novel coronavirus which doesn’t seem to stop anytime soon. People are not only taking preventive measures to protect themselves from the Novel Coronavirus, but most of the people are also desperately looking for the ways through which they could disinfect their houses, surfaces which might be contaminated and all those potential areas which might be at the risk of catching the chances of developing the coronavirus in one way or another.

In this chaotic situation, we believe in being on our toes to provide the virus disinfection and equipping our clients with the information which could work as virus infection prevention without being heavy on one’s pocket.
Before we talk about the procedure of disinfecting and sanitizing the areas, which might be potentially impacted by the coronavirus, it is important to understand the basic ways through which the chances of the virus could be reduced to the minimum.

Safety Precautions
Although it is highly recommended that during this time, all the people should stay inside their houses and maintain the proper social distancing to reduce the chances of maximum spread of the virus. Some of the crucial tips which should be followed by every individual are as follows:
  • Covering one mouth with a tissue while coughing and sneezing
  • Maintaining the social distance and staying in isolation from the people who might be at the risk of developing the virus.
  • Working around your immunity system by consuming the food items which are crucial for the stomach or could help in gaining the energy.
  • If you have traveled around the world then, it is necessary to self-isolate yourself so that you could protect the people around you from the danger of developing coronavirus.
  • Getting the right protective measures in case you have identified that you have developed the symptoms of coronavirus.
  • Additionally, keep washing your hands continuously with water and sanitizing them with 60% alcohol-based sanitizer to protect yourself from the virus spread.

Disinfection and Sanitization Services from Coronavirus
The process of disinfection and sanitization from the viruses is one of the important tasks which needs to be done under the sheer care and protection. When a person initiates the virus sanitization procedure then, they might be at the risk of catching several other health issues which could be harmful to many people.
Some of the virus infection prevention tips which are considered by us while providing the sanitization services from coronavirus are as follows:

Virus Cleaning
It is the crucial part of our agreement that before performing the virus sanitization services, we always perform the cleaning task in which all the germs, dirt, impurities and other particles are removed. The procedure of cleaning doesn’t ensure the killing of germs from any aspect. However, it helps in increasing the chances through which the germs could be killed and the effectiveness of the virus sanitization could be ensured.

Disinfection from Virus
After properly performing the cleaning procedure, we start working on the disinfection of the virus procedure which is well-versed than the cleaning one. This procedure refers to killing all kinds of germs from the surfaces so that there would be no chances of virus spread.
According to the researchers, the virus sanitization should be performed in the areas where the chance of human reach is easier but they are harder to clean. During our research procedure, we managed to come up with all the surfaces with which humans tend to interact frequently and through which the chances of spread are higher.

  • Our service not only includes performing the virus disinfection activities inside the house or areas. However, we also tend to perform it even outside of the house.
  • To execute the task of virus sanitization, we tend to utilize all those chemical and items which are said to be an effective solution towards the germs of coronavirus.
  • For instance, we would be cleaning the doorknobs with the disinfectants which help in removing the germs from the knobs and makes it safer for human beings.
  • After cleaning, the virus infection prevention tips are exclusively provided to the people so that they could take the right measures at the right time and could avoid the spread which is equally harmful to all the people.
  • After cleaning the initial touchpoints, we also believe in calling all those areas and surfaces which are highly interactive to human beings. For instance, if you have kids at your home then, your surface might be busier than usual and because of the same reason, we would be focusing on the surfaces first. Since it is proven by the WHO that coronavirus germs stay on the surfaces usually longer than usual, therefore, taking the right steps at the right time is highly important and should not be neglected at any cost.
  • After surfaces, we tend to target all those areas which in continuous interaction with the human being. We understand that the time is hard for many people but this problem could easily be solved by taking the right measures at the right time because only we can fight against corona in the right manner.

As the situation evolves, you can count on us for accurate and up-to-date information about COVID-19 and the associated risks, as well as hazardous waste disposal services to contain infection. Call GTARestoration.net to safely contain, handle and remove any biohazardous waste from your workplace.

What is COVID-19?

In brief, the coronavirus or Covid-19 is a novel respiratory virus. The main symptoms fever, coughing, fatigue, muscle ache and difficulty breathing.
The Government of Canada has posted the video below summarizing the virus:
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mUrdZGSdAE

How Does It Spread?

The virus is most commonly spread from an infected person through:
· respiratory droplets generated when you cough or sneeze
· close to personal contact, such as shaking hands or any physically  touching
· touching something with this types of virus on it, or touching your mouth, eyes or nose before washing your hands

Not every infected person has obvious symptoms. This means the virus is being transmitted by people who are not even aware they are infected. This is a problem as these ‘carriers’ of the virus, are continuing to visit public spaces and have physical contact with others.

New studies show that the virus can survive on surfaces such as plastic and stainless steel for up to 3 days. This means that the virus can be contracted by simply touching a door handle, railing, check-out screen, elevator button etc. infected by a sick person.

What Should You do to prevent the spread of COVID-19?

The greatest risk of infection is in healthcare facilities where people may be seeking COVID-19 testing or treatment. However, there is a risk of infection anywhere where people are in close proximity.

Make sure you are taking the necessary precautions in your workplace:
· Limit congregations and interactions to only those which are absolutely necessary
· Wear gloves
· Wear long-sleeved clothing
· Practice facial protection:
o wear surgical/procedural masks (only those which are fitted and do not openly let air in are effective)
o wear eye protection such as goggles, or surgical/procedural mask with visor attachment

Most importantly, handle potentially infected materials with care!

· Obtain the right supplies for disposal of any medical or other hazardous waste
· Dispose of sharps waste into puncture resistant containers
· Contain infection by disposing of bodily fluids, pharmaceuticals, gauze, etc. in the proper, Ministry of Environment approved receptacles
· Ensure that all biohazardous waste is promptly removed from your workplace
GTARestoration.net can provide you with the safest containers for containing hazardous waste and is available to promptly remove any waste from your premises.

Coronavirus Infection in Toronto Frequently Asked Questions

Coronavirus Infection in Toronto Frequently Asked Questions

The Coronavirus, or COVID-19 is a contagious viral infection that has many people worried. This worldwide virus has the potential to have a huge impact on almost any industry in our current global economy. Here at GTARestortion.netⓇ, we have been flooded with questions and requests for information on how our technology could help contain this and other pathogens. We have put together few FAQ in order to help.

Have the equipment we use have been tested to be effective against viruses and bacteria?

Yes, the ability of OdoroxⓇ machines to kill viruses, bacteria, and mold was scientifically proven back in December 2014, when the OdoroxⓇ MDU/Rx machine was tested and approved by the FDA as a Class II Medical Device for use in occupied areas.

What data do you have to prove this?

These machines were tested at the Aerosol Research and Engineering Laboratories (ARE), an independent commercial laboratory that specializes in studying aerosolized microbiological organisms. These tests were performed on viruses, bacteria, and mold chosen by the FDA as some of the toughest. These viruses and bacteria were aerosolized in the test, mimicking the way they are often transmitted through actions like people coughing. They did this to obtain FDA approval for the OdoroxⓇ MDU/Rx machine. All of the tests had kill rates of between 4 and 5 log reductions (99.99% and 99.999%) within 2 hours: an exceptionally high (and fast) kill rate. If you want more data, we have detailed information documented by the Head of our Scientific Advisory Board on the independent microbiological laboratory testing that was performed.

Have these equipment been tested to be effective against the Coronavirus, or COVID-19, specifically?

No - this test in not perform at this time. Only the top national labs like the CDC and NIH can get samples of the Coronavirus so soon after an outbreak like this. Commercial labs are not equipped with the biosafety measures and containment protocols needed to test these types of viruses. However, one of the viruses included in the ARE laboratory testing was the MS2 virus, which is an excellent surrogate for the Coronavirus as both are positive-sense single-stranded RNA, or (+)ssRNA viruses. Based on this, we believe that the OdoroxⓇ MDU/Rx machine will be effective against the Coronavirus.

Which OdoroxⓇ machine is the best for killing viruses and bacteria?

The OdoroxⓇ MDU/Rx machine was the one tested and approved by the FDA as a Class II Medical Device for use in occupied areas. We have two other OdoroxⓇ machines that are built exactly the same as that unit but they are more powerful - they are the Oasis+ and the Boss machines. Any of those OdoroxⓇ machines, or the stronger XL3 machine, would be great assets to add to an infection control protocol that would also include things like spraying chemicals, wiping surfaces, and other effective disinfection methods.

How do the OdoroxⓇ machines work?

It’s incredibly easy: you just plug them in and turn them on. Our machines replicate the natural production of hydroxyl radicals to eliminate biological and chemical contaminants. These hydroxyls work on both the air and on surfaces while the spaces are occupied and in use. They can run 24/7, require very little labor, and leave little room for human error.

Where can these machines be used?

Our OdoroxⓇ Technology is ideal for any type of commercial building that has been or could be exposed to the Coronavirus, such as: apartment buildings, condominiums, hotels, big box retailers, universities and schools, manufacturing and industrial warehouse facilities, hospitals, churches, theaters, airports, office buildings, government establishments, and many other high traffic public facilities.

They are safe to use while the building is occupied and in use.

Where can I get the OdoroxⓇ machines?

For rental information, please contact us directly and we will assist you.

24/7 Support to Keep You Safe and Healthy

Finally, it’s important to know that all of this accurate, scientific testing was done before the Coronavirus appeared - the power and abilities that our machines offer have been proven. In response to this global health crisis, and any that may come in the future, we are available 24/7 to answer your questions and provide help for you and your clients’ critical needs.

So you want a professional property restorer?

Of course you do! That’s why you’re reading this Blog!

On the surface, it might look like an easy job of putting in equipment and walking away. Do that... if you want to help mold build up.
Water restoration is a complex trade! It requires a fundamental understanding of: building science, structural building practices, and the science that surrounds water damage restoration. The deeper your knowledge of building sciences and building compositions, and the greater your knowledge is of how building materials respond to moisture, the more likely you’ll be able to increase your profitability and deliver a successfully dried project.

Become a sponge: learn everything you can about the science and let the knowledge soak in.
After all, drying a building is about atmospheric sciences inside and outside the structure. It’s about the molecules and microorganisms that live within your job and it is the application of science that allows you to pull the moisture out.

Here is the good news, this blog is going to simplify the difficult science to help a novice/intermediate restorer make better decisions in the field. This blog won’t replace the courses and hands on knowledge that you will get from the classroom and field, but it will help supplement your learning.

At GTA Restoration, we know it’s hard to master every project—and that’s ok.
We’re going to help you understand the concepts and help you manage all the information that comes your way. By the end of this blog, you will have the skills needed to be able to start drying a building.
We also have a new Moisture tool that can help you simplify your water damage property.
The time you spend with a qualified trainer who has field knowledge and can allow you to learn by relating to their experience is key. If you are using GTA Restoration, you’ll have the playbook that helps you unleash the full potential of saving your property.

However, note that nothing replaces the technical training of the IICRC and the advance learning of the Restoration Industry Association.

Want to be a ‘Power Restorer’? Want to own your town and be known as a ‘Drying God’? Do you have dreams of being called on stage for your Super Hero-Like Skills? Keep reading and join the elite team of GTA Restoration.

The Fundamentals

Sometimes, we forget the fundamentals
Our goal as a restoration professional is to return the building materials to a dry standard or the same moisture level as the other unaffected materials in the building, or to remove, clean, and disinfect the structural materials. The dry standard is the target moisture content for the particular material in its normal (unaffected) state within that structure/specific micro-climate. Materials become ‘dry’ once they reach the dry standard.

This level depends on the type of material, the location of the material in the building, and even where you live and the time of the season.
The various tools you use on the project may also provide you with relatively high or low readings depending on the circumstances. For example, a piece of oak wood in a dry climate might have a dry standard (drying goal) of 6% moisture level. Whereas the same piece of wood on the East Coast might have a dry standard of 10%.
These levels can fluctuate structure to structure and change throughout the year depending on the prevailing weather. This is why it is highly

Moisture Level (ML):
the amount of moisture contained in the material on a relative scale. Moisture level is used when the tool is not calibrated for the specific material. (IICRC S500 V4, 2015, 328)

Moisture Content (MC):
the amount of water contained in a material, expressed as a percentage of the weight of the oven dry material. If a restorer is measuring materials with an instrument that is calibrated for that material, then it is recommended that the term Moisture Content be used (IICRC S500 V4, 2015, 328).
Picture
recommended that a restorer does not use a regional dry standard for drying materials, but uses a specific dry standard for that structure when possible.

Don’t be a Marvin Mold Grower!

Scared about making mistakes and screwing up someone’s building by causing a moldy mess? You should be!
It doesn’t take much to lose track of moisture, especially when you are not paying attention to where it might be going within a building. If you think all the moisture is heading to the dehumidifier then you probably have been running fast and loose with your drying strategy. There is a really good chance you are leaving moisture where you do not want it. You should understand the drying forces and how they apply to the structure. Cocky restorers who think they can dry a structure in three days by throwing in equipment and walking away, scare me and they should scare you too. Yet, they are the ones who should be scared as they tend to use their lawyer and liability insurance more often
As a restorer, we are expected to understand where and how moisture will travel within a structure.
There is a double hit to your property when you make a mistake and cause a mold issu. First, your reputation for handling water losses drops and word spreads very quickly in this industry. The second is that you make a mistake and enter the mold remediation process, because like it or not, it is another restorer that has to clean up your mess.

Let’s review each factor that applies to a drying project and connect them together so you have a full working knowledge. If you understand these principles at the end of this chapter, you will start building a solid foundation.

We are going to start off with what might seem like heavy science but we can simplify it for you.

A Personal Story...

When I first became a restorer, it took me two years to fully comprehend temperature, relative humidity, and humidity ratio (formally referred to as specific humidity). I couldn’t understand how they are interrelated and what they meant. Consequently, I was doing things that were counterproductive to my drying success.

Having gained the knowledge of how to apply vapor pressure differentials to the buildings I was working on, I became aware of where I might encounter the dew point and other challenges to drying a building.

That knowledge has helped me avoid some big mistakes and helped me avoid getting into liability troubles.
I can’t stress enough that you will need to get your advanced water training sooner than later and take it again in a year so you understand and retain the concepts.
Struggling with water concepts?
No problem—we got you covered.
Check out GTA Restoration’s Moisture tool to see how we simplify moisture jobs.

The Laws of Thermodynamics

Understanding the forces that you apply to a building will increase your chances of success. Thermodynamics are the laws that manage energy. For this blog, we’ll simplify the laws. You can apply them to your jobs as these concepts will help you understand drying.
In an isolated system, you cannot create or remove energy. Energy can only be transferred.
THE LAW OF CONSERVATION

To a restorer this means that heat energy in the air can be transferred to the wet and affected materials. Transferring heat into the materials lowers the room air temperature and increases the materials’ temperature. As a material’s temperature increases, the energy is transferred into the moisture. The moisture molecules then get excited as they start to leave the material. The heat energy leaves the materials and this results in evaporative cooling. The energy is transferred to the moisture in the air.

LAW OF EQUILIBRIUM

Energy will remain balanced and will seek to find balance.
If you add higher energy in one area of your structure, that energy will try to balance itself out by finding an area of low energy.

You can simplify this law down to the following statements:
Picture
Picture
Think of air as having energy. An easy way to do this is to look at the weather. A fierce thunderstorm will often follow a hot, humid day. Hot, wet air has a lot of energy in it. You rarely see a thunderstorm in the winter in Canada and the northern United States because colder air has less moisture and energy to create those spectacular storms.
Thinking of air through the lens of energy can help you to understand how the different parts of the drying job interact with each other.
When a restorer adds heat to the room and the air movers circulate that heat over the wet materials, the energy is transferred to the materials. Hot moves to cold and the energy transfers into the material to heat them up.

When using a Thermohygrometer (the tool we use for measuring the atmospheres of a drying chamber), you will be measuring the relative humidity (the percentage of humidity) or humidity ratio (actual amount of moisture in grains per pound—GPP) of the air, and the associated temperature. From there, the tool can calculate vapour pressure, which is a measurement of the energy being applied by the air. Not all devices will provide this measurement.

Applying Thermodynamics to your jobs

As we take the Laws of Thermodynamics and apply them in the real world, it gets complicated as you have many different temperatures and heat energy loads in and around the building. It takes a lot of energy to evaporate moisture into the air. (Law #1 says we cannot destroy energy, we can only transfer it) so as we release the moisture from the materials into the air, the air is now holding onto that energy. For air to move energy, it needs to hold the energy. According to the second Law of Thermodynamics, the Law of Equilibrium, energy in the air wants to balance with an area of lower energy in the surrounding environment.
Picture
What restorers sometimes forget or fail to recognize, is that there are many other areas in a structure that have lower energy.
For example (see above), if you had three rooms in your atmosphere1: a rec-room, hallway, and office, the atmospheres would be working to find balance. A drier room in the chamber would pull moisture from the other rooms. The rooms in the entire chamber would have similar psychrometric readings. Although, there may be slight differences you would only need to take one reading inside your drying chamber instead of taking readings in each room. Now that we know that hot, humid, high energy air is looking for areas that are drier and have less energy, we can investigate the property to look for areas of lower energy and address them as areas of concern. Many restorers make the assumption that moisture will always head toward the dehumidifier. Most LGR dehumidifiers (see page 14). use a mechanically driven fan to bring the higher energy, warm, moist air through an intake and force the air to pass over a colder surface. This process moves the air over cold coils, forcing it
This results in a lower vapor pressure of the air leaving the machine.
to reach the dew point and release the energy in the form of moisture condensing on the coils. As a result, moisture is removed from the air by condensation.

The air then passes over the by-pass and picks up the additional heat energy leaving the machine, with an increased heat and less moisture. You would be familiar with this process if you measure the exhaust on the dehumidifier and you are looking for the grain depression.

What restorers sometimes forget or fail to recognize, is that there are many other areas in a structure that have lower energy. These areas are likely cooler, drier environments such as the unaffected areas of the structure or a colder surface like concrete and metal. Alternatively, the outside might be drier and apply forces to the project that pull the moisture into the walls toward the exterior. The moisture will also be attracted to the cooler surfaces, like exterior walls, windows, ventilation systems and doorways. It is never safe to assume that the moisture will go where you think it will go.

High energy seeks to balance itself with low energy, and hot, moist air will go to hot, dry air or it will seek out colder surfaces. This is where you need to be aware that the moisture is not going to just your dehumidifier. It’s time for you to build and plan your ‘A game’. You need to know where moisture will travel and have a plan for controlling it.

Fire Is a Triple Threat for Property Owners

12/12/2019

Picture
Fire Is a Triple Threat for Property Owners

Fire is a triple threat for property owners because it results in (1) fire damage, (2) water damage and (3) the risk of mold due to flooding. Fire damage includes damage to the property and contents, soot, smoke damage and poor air quality. Flooding from firefighting efforts causes the water damage. And with water damage, there is a very real risk of mold growth within 12-48 hours.

Recovering from a fire in your home or business is a process, so be sure to take the right steps forward. Here are the 3 key steps to get you started:

Step 1: Decontaminate

Fire damage poses the risk of health hazards including serious respiratory issues, so it is absolutely necessary to decontaminate and deodorize your property first to restore your air quality. Attempting to decorate over the soot, smoke and fire damage without first decontaminating and deodorising the property, traps harmful air pollutants and odours and also causes staining to work its way back through any paint application.

In every case of fire damage, be sure to call a professional fire restoration team who will take all the necessary steps to decontaminate the areas and contents to ensure all the harmful pollutants are sanitized and thoroughly removed. Also, depending on the severity of the contamination, some items will need to be transported to a specialized decontamination unit.

Step 2: Address Water Damage to Avoid Mold Growth

Water damage from fire fighting efforts is devastating especially when it extends to soaked furniture and flooring, electric appliances and other irreplaceable household items. Furthermore, any kind of water damage should always be addressed immediately as harmful mold growth can begin within 12-48 hours.

Other complications from water damage include steel and iron corrosion as well as wood rot in walls and furniture.

Immediate water damage remediation includes removing the water, as well as drying and sanitizing both your property and all your contents. Initially, vacuums and pumps are used to remove any standing water; after removing the water, the drying process is initiated with fans and dehumidifiers.

It is very important for property owners to note that drying is not enough. All damaged items and personal belongings must be sanitized and cleaned to prevent mold growth including carpets, clothing, and rugs, which require thorough antimicrobial treatments.

Step 3: Restoration

Once your property is decontaminated, you need a professional team of restoration experts to address your water damage, assess the full extent of the damage to your property and supply you with a fair and detailed estimate of the cost to restore your home or business to its original state or better.

Always engage a professional restoration surveyor to assess the damage and provide you with an itemized estimate for the work. Recommended restoration work ranges from:

  • Cleaning and decontamination of carpets, rugs, fine fabrics and soft furnishings
  • Odor removal
  • Restoration of documents
  • Restoration of fine arts
  • Floor and wall repair and replacement

In the event of a fire, be sure to take the right steps forward. Together with your professional emergency restoration team, you will get through this and start again

How Crime Scene Cleaners Sanitize a Trauma Scene

How Crime Scene Cleaners Sanitize a Trauma Scene
Cleaning up a crime scene may not seem like the ideal occupation, but someone has to do it. Often times, the dwelling where the fatalities or injuries occurred is going to be placed back on the market.  Not to worry though, as the process is similar to sewage cleanup in that it deals with the removal of bio-hazardous waste. Crime scene cleaners are trained to remove any reminders of the tragedy that occurred, while also remaining cautious and respectful of the injured or deceased.

Obtain the Right Gear
Crime scene cleaners are dealing with bio-hazardous waste and should always ensure they have to correct gear before attending a scene. This includes:
  • One time full body suit that can be discarded after use.
  • A mask to prevent breathing in airborne hazards or from ingesting harmful bodily fluids.
  • Thick, disposal gloves to prevent skin-to-skin contact.
  • Goggles to prevent the eyes from being exposed to hazardous materials.

For a crime scene heavily tainted in blood and bodily fluids, a respirator is handy to filter the air.

Remove and Dispose of Blood Tainted Materials
Next, crime scene cleaners will search the area particularly for items that may be tainted with blood or bodily fluids. This can include but are not limited to:
  • Mattresses
  • Curtains
  • Rugs/Carpets
  • Sofas
  • Clothing
  • Anything porous and absorbent
The main goal of this step is to remove any traces of blood or bodily fluids. This is also the most dangerous and risky part of the cleanup as the potential for contact with the hazards is greater. Anything that is clearly tainted with hazardous waste is labelled in bio-hazard containers and disposed of by a bio-hazardous waste disposal professional. In cases of sofas or mattresses, where only some portions may be splattered with hazardous waste, they must be dismantled and the saturated areas cut out and disposed of separately.

When dealing with carpets or flooring that is tainted with blood and bodily fluid, each layer is removed until it tests negative for the presence of contaminants.

Clean, Disinfect, and Deodorize
This is where crime scene cleaners conduct an in-depth cleaning to completely sanitize the space and eliminate odours. For concrete, the process usually involves pressure washing with chemical solutions to break down the blood and scrubbing with abrasive tools.

Typically, all surfaces are cleaned and sanitized with the use of high-quality medical grade chemicals. This way, they can be sure that viruses and bacteria are eliminated. Sometimes, the cause of death or injury is a virus and that’s why this is necessary. Sometimes it is unknown whether the injured or deceased has a virus in their blood, so it is better to be safe than sorry. Afterwards, special deodorizers are used to remove any lingering odours of a trauma scene.

Verify the Trauma Scene is Safe
Once a crime scene is sanitized, a crime scene cleaner will use ATP (adenosine triphosphate testing technology to guarantee the area is disinfected and safe. Never meddle in a crime scene. Always report it, so the professionals can take appropriate measures.

What to do if you discover mold growth in your home?

What to do if you discover mold growth in your home?

Your house is a place where you find comfort. Its coziness welcomes you every day after you return home from work. If your home is unbecoming you won’t get the stress-free atmosphere you are looking or after a day at work. Therefore, you need to keep your home neat and clean by getting rid of rodents and insects like cockroaches and mice along with other infestation causing organisms like termites and mold.
While cockroaches, mice, and termites can creep into your house even after you take extreme measures, mold can infest your house only if you are careless. What is so special about mold? Let us find out!

Mold and its Growth

Mold is basically a fungus that exists all around is. It is an organism that can be found in the air, in water and even outside in nature. In nature, Mold is an important part of the ecosystem as it helps break down dead leaves, plants, and even trees. It thrives in moisture so it exists widely in Water Damage.

Causes

Mold can infest your house only if you leave a damp spot in your house. Now you might think why would you just randomly leave a damp spot in your home? Well, things can happen. Perhaps, you spilled Water Damage on your wall or there is seepage in your walls that keep them damp. Mold only needs little space to flourish and infest your home. And once it cements its place somewhere in your home, it can start to grow and spread just like any other bacteria.
Humidity can also have a similar effect. Basically, anything wet or damp is a breeding ground for such bacteria. You need to avoid such situations and fix any leaking pipes or seepage that might be found in your house.

Adverse Effects of Mold on You and the Environment

Mold is a pretty interesting organism, in that it is different from any other multicellular organism. Unlike most fungi, mold exists everywhere. It is in the air, and in the ground. Wherever there is moisture, there is mold. Keeping that in mind you can imagine the adverse effects mold can have on your house and also on your health.

When it comes to your house, mold can destroy its beauty. A clean house can look ugly and smell bad if it is infested with mold. Mold is small and either green or black. It comes in patches in your home from where it spreads into the air and even to the nearest wall or pipe. These patches are usually found under bathroom sinks or near water and sewerage pipes. Small patches of mold pose no threat but if the organism spreads, as it's its nature, you can expect it to release some of itself in the air around you. If you inhale too much mold you might get sick and in the long run, this infestation can become risky for you. Sickness associated with mold exposure is sinus problems, breathing problems, sore throat, nosebleed, headache, skin irritation, and even cancer. You would do well to rid yourself of mold as soon as possible.

So, in essence, with mold not only will your house look bad, it will smell bad and the air inside won’t be healthy for you or your friends and relatives. You should get your house checked for mold and get it treated by professionals. If you are in Toronto, GTA Restoration is a good place to call for help.

Types of Mold

There is no one kind of mold. It has a wide range of species but they can be classified under three types.

Allergenic

This is the mildest type of mold. Allergenic mold can cause problems for people who have asthma or who are specifically allergic to mold. This kind of mold is not lethal but you are better removing it from your home.

Pathogenic

This kind of mold is relatively harmful to both sick and healthy people. Pathogenic mold can lead to hypersensitivity pneumonitis, which is harmful and can even lead to death if not treated readily.

Toxigenic

This is the most lethal kind of Black Mold as it can cause temporary and permanent illnesses starting from eye and skin irritation and going onto serious issues like cancer, immunosuppression, and neurological disorders. All these diseases are caused by mycotoxins released by the fungus.

How to Prevent Mold

Instead of dealing with mold after your home is affected by it, it is better to prevent mold from developing fully. However, you should keep in mind that keeping your house completely mold free is impossible since bacterium breathe air and you cannot stop air from spreading everywhere.
There are a few ways you can prevent mold:

Prevent Moisture

As we have learned, mold thrives in moisture. So, in order to stop it from flourishing, you need to keep a keen eye on moisture in your home. Regularly check high-risk areas like the bathtub, and wash basins. Furthermore, install dehumidifiers in your home to reduce the amount of moisture in the air.

Prevent Dust

Dust carries millions of bacteria, which can infect your home. If you can prevent dust from accumulating in your humble abode, you can prevent the formation of mold.
Thorough Ventilation
Germs and bacteria like dirty places, as well as places that are devoid of proper ventilation. If your home is not properly ventilated you will find many kinds of bacteria and insects roaming around.

Conclusion

If you want to ensure a healthy living environment, you need to get your house tested and cured of mold. Professionals who can undertake this job are hard to come by but fortunately here at GTA Restoration we employ the best of the best in the field. Our team of trained professionals will do their job to the best of their ability and rid your home of any and all mold infestation. All you need to do is grab a phone to call us and our team of professionals will be at your doorstep at the earliest.
