What is COVID-19?
 
In brief, the coronavirus or Covid-19 is a novel respiratory virus. The main symptoms fever, coughing, fatigue, muscle ache and difficulty breathing.

How Does It Spread?
 
The virus is most commonly spread from an infected person through:
· respiratory droplets generated when you cough or sneeze
· close to personal contact, such as shaking hands or any physically  touching
· touching something with this types of virus on it, or touching your mouth, eyes or nose before washing your hands

Not every infected person has obvious symptoms. This means the virus is being transmitted by people who are not even aware they are infected. This is a problem as these ‘carriers’ of the virus, are continuing to visit public spaces and have physical contact with others. 

New studies show that the virus can survive on surfaces such as plastic and stainless steel for up to 3 days. This means that the virus can be contracted by simply touching a door handle, railing, check-out screen, elevator button etc. infected by a sick person.
 

What Should You do to prevent the spread of COVID-19?

The greatest risk of infection is in healthcare facilities where people may be seeking COVID-19 testing or treatment. However, there is a risk of infection anywhere where people are in close proximity.
 
Make sure you are taking the necessary precautions in your workplace:
· Limit congregations and interactions to only those which are absolutely necessary
· Wear gloves
· Wear long-sleeved clothing
· Practice facial protection:
o wear surgical/procedural masks (only those which are fitted and do not openly let air in are effective)
o wear eye protection such as goggles, or surgical/procedural mask with visor attachment

Most importantly, handle potentially infected materials with care!

· Obtain the right supplies for disposal of any medical or other hazardous waste
· Dispose of sharps waste into puncture resistant containers
· Contain infection by disposing of bodily fluids, pharmaceuticals, gauze, etc. in the proper, Ministry of Environment approved receptacles
